The GeForce RTX 4070’s $599 starting price was first reported as a leak, but NVIDIA later confirmed that same price as its launch MSRP. That was $150.99 below the earlier $749.99 expectation—not a sign that the card was inexpensive by past-generation standards.
What did the RTX 4070 price leak say?
A report from Tom’s Hardware on April 2, 2023 said a leak put the GeForce RTX 4070 at $599 and listed its total graphics power at 200W. The report cautioned that the specifications circulating at the time came from leaks rather than NVIDIA confirmation. Read Tom’s Hardware’s report.
The $599 rumor followed earlier discussion of a $749.99 price. Notebookcheck later described the reported change as a reduction from $749.99 to $599.99 and said the final MSRP reportedly surprised add-in-board partners. That partner reaction was part of leak coverage, not a statement confirmed by NVIDIA. Notebookcheck’s report.

Did NVIDIA confirm the $599 price?
Yes. NVIDIA’s official announcement said: “Introducing the GeForce RTX 4070, available April 13th, starting at $599.” The company confirmed the starting price and April 13, 2023 availability. See NVIDIA’s GeForce announcement.

NVIDIA’s April 12, 2023 newsroom release presented the RTX 4070 as an Ada Lovelace GPU with DLSS 3 and real-time ray tracing. It also said NVIDIA expected most modern games to run above 100 frames per second at 1440p; that is the company’s performance claim, not a universal result across games or settings. How much cheaper was it than expected?
Compared with the earlier $749.99 expectation, NVIDIA’s confirmed $599 starting MSRP was $150.99 lower. That explains the “much cheaper” framing: it was cheaper than the anticipated price, not necessarily cheap in absolute terms.

What does the $599 figure mean for buyers?
$599 was the card’s starting MSRP at launch, not a guarantee that every RTX 4070 model or retailer would charge that amount. Add-in-board partner cards can be listed at different prices, and a historical MSRP does not establish current availability or street price.

If comparing an RTX 4070 with another graphics card, look beyond launch price: compare actual current listings, 1440p performance in the games you play, ray tracing, supported features such as DLSS 3, VRAM capacity, board power and availability. NVIDIA’s above-100-fps-at-1440p statement is a company claim about most modern games, not a substitute for game-by-game results.
