If your RTX 3090 shows no display, first note when the screen goes black: before POST/BIOS, or after the Windows logo. A pre-boot blank screen points first to the monitor connection, GPU seating and power, or DisplayPort compatibility. If the PC displays POST and the Windows logo before going black, focus on Windows display settings and the graphics driver after checking the physical connections.
First, identify when the display disappears
Watch the screen from the moment you power on the PC. A blank screen before the manufacturer logo or BIOS appears is a different problem from one that starts only after Windows begins loading. This timing determines which checks are most useful.
| What you see | Start with |
|---|---|
| No image from power-on, including no POST or BIOS | Monitor and cable path, GPU seating and power, PSU capacity, then DisplayPort firmware compatibility. |
| POST or BIOS appears, then the screen goes black during Windows startup | Physical connection first, then Windows Safe Mode, display configuration, and the graphics driver. |
Check the monitor and cable path
Make sure the monitor is powered on and set to the input that matches the cable in use. Connect the display cable directly to an output on the RTX 3090, not to a motherboard video output. Reseat the cable at both ends. NVIDIA advises users to double-check that both ends of the HDMI or DisplayPort cable are securely connected: NVIDIA Support troubleshooting discussion.

If the screen remains black, try a known-good cable, another output on the card, or another monitor. When practical, switch between HDMI and DisplayPort: if one connection works and the other does not, that narrows the problem to the cable, output, monitor, or DisplayPort compatibility rather than proving the GPU itself is faulty.

Reseat the RTX 3090 and check its power connections
Before opening the case, shut the PC down and disconnect it from AC power. Check that the card is fully seated in its PCIe slot and that every GPU power connector is firmly inserted. For a Founders Edition card, NVIDIA’s guide specifies two separate PCIe 8-pin cables from the power supply to the included dual-8-pin-to-12-pin adapter; the adapter’s 12-pin plug connects to the card. Connect the monitor to the graphics card. See the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 User Guide.
Use the manual for your specific board-partner RTX 3090 if it is not a Founders Edition; connector arrangements can differ by model. Do not assume that a card is receiving power correctly just because its fans spin.

Confirm the PSU and cabling are suitable
NVIDIA’s RTX 3090 specification lists 750 W as the required system power for the Founders Edition. Treat that as NVIDIA’s published system-power requirement, not as a guarantee that every PSU rated at 750 W will work in every build. The PSU’s condition, the rest of the system, and how the GPU is cabled also matter. NVIDIA’s specification page lists the requirement and the Founders Edition’s display connections: GeForce RTX 3090 specifications.
For the Founders Edition adapter, use two separate PCIe 8-pin cables from the PSU, as directed in NVIDIA’s guide. Never use an unverified modular PSU cable: modular cables are not universally interchangeable between PSU models, even when the plugs appear to fit. If the system’s PSU rating or cabling is inadequate, the PC may fail to POST or may shut down or lose display under load.

Rule out DisplayPort firmware compatibility
NVIDIA says that some modern high-resolution DisplayPort monitors used with GeForce RTX 30-series cards may need its GPU Firmware Update Tool when they experience black screens. MSI also documents a possible DP 1.3/1.4 compatibility issue that can cause no display before boot or a boot stall. If you can, connect the monitor over HDMI or use another monitor while isolating the issue; this can provide a working display while you check the firmware guidance.
Use NVIDIA’s official GPU Firmware Update Tool information and follow its instructions if your symptoms and setup match. MSI’s explanation of the DisplayPort issue is available in its DisplayPort 1.3/1.4 compatibility guidance. A firmware update is not a universal fix for every black screen, so first confirm the basic display path and power connections.

If the screen goes black only when Windows loads
If you can see POST or BIOS and the Windows logo, but the screen becomes black during startup, use Windows recovery or Safe Mode to work on software causes. Microsoft identifies display-output misconfiguration, corrupted user profiles, and incompatible or incomplete updates among possible causes of blank screens. See Microsoft’s black or blank screen troubleshooting guide.
Recommended Free Tools
- Enter Windows Recovery Environment or Safe Mode using Microsoft’s recovery instructions. If the usual sign-in screen is unavailable, use the recovery options available for your PC rather than repeatedly changing hardware while Windows is loading.
- In Safe Mode, check that Windows is sending the image to the connected monitor and that the display configuration is appropriate for a single-monitor test.
- Repair or reinstall the NVIDIA display driver if the problem began after a driver change, update, or incomplete installation. Restart normally and see whether the image returns.
- If the issue persists, use Microsoft’s clean-boot troubleshooting approach to check whether a startup app or service is interfering. Re-enable items methodically after testing.
Use the results to narrow the fault
Change one variable at a time so each test gives you useful information. A known-good monitor and cable connected directly to the card help separate a display-path fault from a PC fault. If another cable or output works, focus on the original connection. If HDMI works but DisplayPort does not, investigate DisplayPort cable, monitor, and firmware compatibility. If the same card still has no display with a known-good display path and properly checked power, the remaining possibilities include the GPU, PCIe slot, or another system component; the checks above alone cannot identify which part has failed.
