RTFM means “read the f*ing manual”: a blunt internet shorthand telling someone to check the relevant instructions or documentation before asking a question. It can be a terse pointer to an existing answer or a dismissive reply, depending on context. A friendlier expansion is “Read the Fine Manual.”

What does RTFM mean?

RTFM is an initialism used in informal online discussions. Its common expansion is “read the f*ing manual,” with the profanity sometimes written out and sometimes censored. The “manual” can be any relevant instructions or documentation, not necessarily a printed book.

In RFC 1206, an informational document published by the User Services Working Group in February 1991, the glossary defines RTFM as “read the f*ing manual” and says the “f” word varies according to the reader’s vehemence. The document is an early dated record of the term, not evidence of exactly when it was coined.

How is RTFM used, and what tone does it carry?

The phrase directs someone to consult existing documentation before asking a question that may already be answered there. In a terse reply, it can be a blunt reminder to search first; it can also sound pointed or hostile, particularly when directed at a newcomer. The Debian Administrator’s Handbook describes it as wording sometimes used in terse responses to newcomers’ questions.

When giving technical help, it is more useful to name the specific guide, section, or search term than to reply with RTFM alone. That tells the person where to look and avoids making the phrase sound like an insult in place of an answer.

What does “Read the Fine Manual” mean?

“Read the Fine Manual” is a documented friendlier expansion of RTFM in the Debian Administrator’s Handbook. It softens the wording; the practical advice is the same: consult the relevant documentation.

When was RTFM first used?

RFC 1206 records the abbreviation in February 1991, and RFC 1594 repeats its definition in March 1994. These documents establish that RTFM was in use by those dates, but they do not identify who coined it or prove its exact first use.
