The RPCS3 team is not pursuing an official PS5 port, according to Notebookcheck’s report of a response to a fan on X. Separately, an independent developer says an experimental RPCS3 homebrew build runs on a jailbroken PS5 Pro. That build is unofficial, unsupported by RPCS3, and has only been tried with a small number of games.
Official RPCS3 plans and the PS5 Pro build are separate efforts
Notebookcheck reports that the RPCS3 team told a fan it has “no interest” in bringing the emulator to PS5. The report also says the team had previously questioned whether the PS5’s Zen 2 CPU is powerful enough for proper PS3 emulation. The opened report does not include the full original X post, so the reported position should not be read as a detailed technical statement or a permanent policy. Read Notebookcheck’s report.

The independent project does not change that position. Its author describes RPCS3 running as a homebrew title on a jailbroken PS5, rather than as an official release from Sony or the RPCS3 team. The project says it is unsupported by RPCS3 and warns users to expect crashes, freezes, or games that do not work. See the project repository and its documentation.
What the developer says works—and what remains unknown
The project author reports testing on a single PS5 Pro with a handful of games. The README names two results; they are individual claims from the developer, not independent benchmarks or evidence of broad PS3 compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
| Game | Developer-reported result |
|---|---|
| Need for Speed Carbon (BLUS30016) | Reported as fully playable at 60 fps. |
| inFAMOUS (BCUS98119) | Reported to boot and play, but stutter and fall below full speed in heavier areas. |
The README says no other games had been tried when it was written and warns that most remain untested. It provides no overall compatibility rate or representative performance study. These results should not be generalized to other games or PS5 consoles. Project notes and reported game results.
What “native” means in this project
Here, “native” describes the way the emulator is packaged and launched as a PS5 homebrew title; it does not mean an official Sony or RPCS3 app. According to the project, it renders through Vulkan using the PS5_Vulkan project’s RADV port, uses SceAudioOut for audio and ScePad for DualSense input, and presents RPCS3 Big Picture Mode as its frontend. Technical details in the repository.
The reported setup requires more than a PS5 Pro
The developer’s tested configuration was a PS5 Pro running firmware 13.60 with the Relapse jailbreak, etaHEN, ftpsrv, and ShadowMount+. Those are details of the author’s setup, not a general compatibility guarantee. This is not an ordinary install for a stock retail console.

The repository recommends an Arch or CachyOS Linux computer for building, while noting that other systems can work with equivalent dependencies. It lists roughly 20 GB of disk space for the build. On the console side, its documentation names an FTP service and ShadowMount+ as installation prerequisites. The repository supplies source code and build scripts, not a ready-to-install title binary. Build requirements and installation notes.
The project documentation says users must provide their own PS3 firmware file (PS3UPDAT.PUP) and game dumps. It describes copying game folders to the console or using an exFAT USB drive. The author warns against redistributing the combined title, firmware, keys, or games, and says users assume the risks associated with jailbreaks, payloads, and unsigned titles. These are the developer’s instructions and cautions, not an endorsement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does it play original PS3 discs?
The available project documentation describes using game folders or dumps; it does not demonstrate direct playback from a PS3 disc in the PS5’s drive. A question about disc playback in the project discussion is not evidence that the build supports it. Project discussion.
