A router connects separate networks and directs traffic between them; a switch connects devices within one local network (LAN). A basic Layer 2 switch forwards local data using MAC addresses, while a router uses destination IP addresses and routing information. At home or in a small office, a router typically provides the LAN’s path to the internet, and a switch can add wired connections for devices on that LAN.

What is the difference between a router and a switch?

Comparison Switch Router
Scope Connects devices within a LAN Connects separate networks, such as a LAN and the internet
Forwarding information A basic Layer 2 switch uses MAC addresses to forward frames through the appropriate port Uses destination IP addresses and routing information to forward packets
Typical task Connects local devices or adds wired ports to a LAN Provides a path between networks

Cisco’s switching explanation describes a switch as connecting devices within a LAN using MAC addresses, and a router as connecting LANs to other networks or the internet using IP addresses. These are the typical roles; some switches also have routing capabilities.

How does each device forward traffic?

How a switch handles local traffic

A Layer 2 switch learns which MAC addresses are reachable through its ports. When it receives a frame for a device on the local network, it uses that address information to send the frame through the appropriate port. This is how devices on the same LAN can exchange traffic without the switch routing between networks. See Cisco’s overview of network switching.

How a router handles traffic between networks

A router checks a packet’s destination IP address and consults its routing table to decide where to forward it. IP addressing and routing information let it direct traffic toward another network rather than simply connect local devices. Cisco explains this process in its routing overview.

Do you need a router or a switch?

  • You need a router when your network needs to communicate with another network, commonly to provide a path from a home or office LAN to the internet.
  • You may need a switch when you need more wired connections for devices on an existing LAN. A switch adds local network ports; it does not, by itself, provide the LAN’s connection to the internet.

For basic connectivity, an unmanaged Ethernet switch is a plug-and-play option. Whether you need one depends on how many wired connections your network needs; a switch is not necessary just because you have a router. Cisco’s small-business guidance describes using a switch with a router to extend wired device connections.

Can a switch connect to a router?

Yes. Connect a switch to a LAN port on the router, then connect wired devices to the switch. The devices can join the local network through that link, while the router remains the device that routes traffic between the LAN and other networks. Cisco outlines this practical arrangement in its switching guidance for small businesses.

Are all switches Layer 2 devices?

No. A basic Layer 2 switch forwards local frames using MAC addresses, but multilayer switches can also perform routing functions. So the distinction is about the device’s role and capabilities, not an absolute rule that every switch only works at Layer 2. Cisco discusses this overlap in its overview of network switches.
