Updating is the safer choice when the router is still receiving security support from its manufacturer. Replacing it is generally safer once support has ended, because a final firmware update cannot fix vulnerabilities discovered afterward. Check the support status of your exact model—not just whether it still works or is available for sale.

Should you update your router or replace it?

Use the manufacturer’s support status as the deciding factor:

  • The exact model is supported and security firmware is available: install the latest official firmware, following the instructions for that model.
  • The manufacturer says support has ended or security updates have stopped: plan to replace the router with a currently supported model. The FBI advises consumers to replace an end-of-life router with an updated model if possible (FBI alert).
  • Status is unclear: check the maker’s support page using the router’s exact model and hardware revision. Look at firmware release history and security notices, or ask the manufacturer.

A router that continues to connect to the internet is not necessarily supported. Nor does a feature update, by itself, establish that the manufacturer is still providing security fixes.

Why a last firmware update does not replace ongoing support

Firmware updates can address known problems, but a final release cannot patch vulnerabilities found after the manufacturer stops supporting the device. Support status therefore matters more than whether the router has received an update at some point.

“End of life” can refer to different milestones, such as the end of software maintenance, security vulnerability support, or all vendor support. Check what the manufacturer means for your specific model. Cisco’s lifecycle notice illustrates how milestones can differ, but it covers named enterprise routers and is not a lifecycle rule for consumer routers (Cisco lifecycle notice).

How to check support and update safely

  1. Identify the exact router. Find its model and hardware revision on the device label or in its app or administration interface.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s support page. Search for that exact model and revision. Review its end-of-support information, firmware release history, and security notices. If the status is not clear, contact the manufacturer.
  3. If security support is active, use the official update route. Prefer the manufacturer’s app or router administration interface when it offers an update; otherwise, follow the model-specific instructions on the official support site. The Australian Cyber Security Centre advises obtaining firmware from the manufacturer’s official website and checking when the last update was issued (ACSC guidance).
  4. Confirm the file and instructions match your device. Do not install firmware for a different model or hardware revision. Follow the manufacturer’s process and do not interrupt power during installation.
  5. Recheck support periodically. A current update does not guarantee future maintenance. Review vendor notices for your model, particularly if support is nearing its stated end date.

NIST’s consumer-router requirements call for verified update mechanisms and ways to keep software current. They describe recommended product requirements, not proof that every router meets them (NIST IR 8425A).

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

What to look for in a replacement router

A newer router is not automatically a safer long-term choice. Compare support and fit for the exact model you are considering:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Published security support: Is there a clear support commitment or end-of-support date?
  • Update delivery: Does the router support automatic updates, or clearly notify owners when updates are available?
  • Internet compatibility: Does it work with your provider, modem or optical network terminal, and service plan?
  • Household needs: Does it provide suitable coverage, wired ports, capacity for your connected devices, and any parental or guest-network controls you need?

NIST’s guidance supports considering update mechanisms, but the cited sources do not establish a universal minimum support period, identify a best model, or rank routers by price or value. Check current product details and support terms before buying.

What the U.S. router update waiver does—and does not—mean

A U.S. regulatory waiver should not be mistaken for a manufacturer support commitment. In a notice released May 8, 2026, the FCC Office of Engineering and Technology extended permission for certain qualifying foreign-produced routers—already authorized in the United States before being placed on the Covered List—to continue receiving software and firmware updates that mitigate harm to U.S. consumers through at least January 1, 2029 (FCC OET notice DA 26-454).

That date is not a replacement deadline, does not show that any particular router remains supported, and does not apply to all routers. The waiver concerns which updates may be delivered under the stated conditions; check your manufacturer’s support information for the status of your device.

Which official guidance applies to consumers?

The FBI’s alert provides consumer-oriented advice to replace an end-of-life router if possible. CISA’s end-of-support directive, by contrast, applies to covered Federal Civilian Executive Branch systems; it is not a legal requirement for every household. Its direction to update supported edge devices and decommission end-of-support devices offers policy context, not a consumer mandate (CISA directive).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical distinction is straightforward: keep a supported router’s firmware current, and do not treat an unsupported device’s last update as protection against future flaws.
