For a typical home network, connect the modem or fiber ONT’s Ethernet output to the router port labeled WAN or Internet. Plug computers, TVs, and other wired devices into the router’s LAN ports. If a port is labeled WAN/LAN, check your router’s model-specific instructions: it may need to be assigned a role in the settings.
What WAN and LAN mean on a router
WAN connects the router to the internet source
WAN stands for wide area network. The router’s WAN or Internet port is its upstream connection: it links to a modem, an optical network terminal (ONT), or the LAN port of another router that provides internet access. Huawei’s support guidance describes the WAN port as connecting to a modem or another router’s downlink LAN port (Huawei support).
With fiber service, the fiber typically terminates at an ONT. Connect an Ethernet cable from the ONT’s Ethernet output to the router’s WAN/Internet port; do not try to plug the fiber cable directly into an ordinary Ethernet port.

LAN stands for local area network. Router LAN ports are for wired devices such as computers, televisions, and set-top boxes. A LAN port can also connect to an Ethernet switch, which adds more ports for wired devices (TP-Link support).

Connect the right cable to the right port
- Locate the modem or ONT’s Ethernet output. For a fiber connection, use the ONT’s Ethernet port.
- Connect it to the router’s WAN or Internet port. Follow the printed label, not the port’s position or color. If no dedicated WAN port is obvious, look up the exact router model and hardware revision in its manual or support material.
- Connect wired devices to LAN ports. If you need more connections, attach an Ethernet switch to one router LAN port, then connect your extra devices to the switch.
- Check any shared WAN/LAN port’s role. Some routers let you assign a multi-gigabit port as WAN or LAN in the administration interface. For example, NETGEAR documents choosing a multi-gig port as the WAN preference on supported models (NETGEAR setup guidance).
Why labels and settings matter more than port color
There is no universal color code that identifies WAN and LAN ports. Router layouts vary, and a port with a higher speed rating may be configurable rather than dedicated to one job. Read the port labels and check the manual or router setup interface for your specific model and firmware.
Some models have a dedicated WAN port; others offer a shared WAN/LAN port or allow a multi-gig port to be assigned as WAN. ASUS documents selectable WAN configuration for supported models (ASUS support). Do not assume that a shared port will function as WAN automatically.

What to check if the connection is slow
A fast port does not make every part of a connection faster. The internet speed available to a device is constrained by the service and by the modem or ONT, router port, Ethernet cable, and client port along the path. A 2.5 Gbps router port cannot turn a 1 Gbps upstream connection into a 2.5 Gbps internet connection.

- Check the rated speed of the modem or ONT’s Ethernet output and the router port it connects to.
- Check the router’s WAN and LAN specifications and confirm that a configurable port is assigned the intended role.
- Check the wired device’s Ethernet port and the cable, and see what link speed the router or device reports.
- For a local connection to a NAS or another wired device, a faster LAN link may improve transfers on the home network even when internet speed stays the same.
Multi-gigabit rates are product capabilities, not guarantees of internet performance. NETGEAR lists supported rates for its described multi-gig ports, including 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, and 5 Gbps; its 2.5G-port guidance also lists 10 Mbps (NETGEAR multi-gig guidance). Those lists apply to the product guidance cited, not every router or network.

As one model-specific example, TP-Link lists the Archer AX55 Pro with one 2.5 Gbps WAN port, one 2.5 Gbps LAN port, and three Gigabit LAN ports (TP-Link Archer AX55 Pro specifications). Other routers may have different port counts, speeds, and role assignments.
Common connection mistakes and exceptions
Plugging the modem into a LAN port
In a conventional router setup, connect the modem or ONT to WAN/Internet, not LAN. LAN is for home-network devices. If your router supports configurable ports, use the model’s instructions to assign the port correctly.

Expecting a shared port to work as WAN without setup
A WAN/LAN port may require a setting change before it can serve as the internet uplink. Check the router’s administration interface and documentation for the relevant port preference or WAN assignment.
Connecting two cables for WAN aggregation
WAN aggregation is not simply plugging in a second cable. NETGEAR’s instructions require compatible Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) support from the connected modem and configuration on both devices (NETGEAR WAN aggregation instructions). Unless the equipment documentation specifically calls for it, use one cable between the modem or ONT and the router’s WAN port. An incorrectly configured multi-link connection can also cause network problems.

Replacing a working cable without a reason
A damaged cable or a cable that does not suit a particular high-speed setup can limit a link. ASUS recommends Cat6 or above for maximum 10G speed in its cited guidance (ASUS support). That is not a reason to replace every working cable in an ordinary home setup.

Use the complete model name and hardware revision when checking port roles, supported speeds, or menu instructions. Shared-port behavior and settings can vary by model and firmware, so a generic diagram may not match your router. Manufacturer specifications describe supported capabilities; they are not independent measurements of the speed you will get.
