Six months is the maximum suspension reportedly available under the Portuguese Football Federation’s rules—not a confirmed punishment for Cristiano Ronaldo. RTP/Lusa reported on 30 September 2026 that Article 160 provides for a one-to-six-month suspension when a regularly called-up player unjustifiably leaves or misses national-team activity. The reports available here do not establish a final disciplinary decision or a verified case-status update after 1 October.
Has Ronaldo been suspended?
The reports do not confirm that Ronaldo received a six-month ban—or any final sanction. On 1 October, a report said no disciplinary case or suspension had been announced by that point. That is a dated update, not confirmation of the formal status on 3 October 2026; the available reporting does not establish whether anything changed afterward.
The distinction matters: Article 160’s reported six-month figure is the upper end of a possible penalty range, not a ruling against Ronaldo. The rule’s application depends in part on whether his departure is found to have been unjustified.

What happened at Portugal’s camp?
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed Ronaldo left the team camp in Copenhagen ahead of matches against Denmark and Norway. EFE reported that the federation did not give a reason and said preparations would continue with the other 24 called-up players. Its statement said the delegation remained focused on upcoming commitments and its objectives (EFE).

Ronaldo said he would explain his reasons later. As translated and reported by EFE, he said: “In due time, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led to my departure from the national team, to which I have always dedicated myself.” That statement did not announce a definitive retirement from Portugal.
RTP/Lusa reported that Ronaldo started Portugal’s 1–0 win over Wales and was an unused substitute in the 2–1 win over Norway. Coach Jorge Jesus said Ronaldo had not refused to train, but the same report said Ronaldo did not train with the group that day. Those details do not establish why he left or whether the departure breached the rule.

What does Article 160 reportedly say?
RTP/Lusa reported on 30 September 2026 that Article 160 applies to a player who has been regularly called up and leaves or unjustifiably misses a training session, match, or activity of the national teams or an activity related to the FPF or Portugal’s sporting representation. The report quotes the potential sanctions as follows:

Does “automatic preventive suspension” mean a final ban?
No. RTP/Lusa also quoted Article 160(2) as saying: “Absence or departure determines the automatic preventive suspension of the player under the terms provided for in this regulation.” The clause describes a preventive measure under the regulation’s terms; it should not be treated as a final disciplinary ruling, and it does not by itself establish a six-month suspension.
What remains unconfirmed?
- Why Ronaldo left the camp: the FPF statement reported by EFE gave no reason, and Ronaldo said he would explain later.
- Whether his departure is formally considered unjustified, a condition relevant to the reported Article 160 sanction.
- Whether a disciplinary case, preventive measure, or final decision was announced after the 1 October status report.
RTP/Lusa reported that Ronaldo had made 234 appearances for Portugal and scored 146 goals as of 30 September 2026. These are figures attributed to that report and date.
