Roman Sands RE:Build is an apocalypse adventure that puts everyday resort work beside a failing zoological research station. Its unusual premise links guest-service tasks, puzzles, surreal storytelling, and survival horror—but the official description and early player comments are not enough to establish how well the experience works as a whole. The clearest expectation is a story-led, genre-blending game, not a conventional action-horror title.
What is Roman Sands RE:Build?
Developed by Arbitrary Metric and published by Serenity Forge, Roman Sands RE:Build was released on September 16, 2026. Serenity Forge describes it as a journey through “two broken realities”: a luxury retreat and a decaying zoological research facility. The publisher classifies it across visual novel, adventure, puzzle solving, horror, and survival simulation.

That combination is the game’s defining hook. One storyline makes service work part of an increasingly ominous resort routine; the other shifts toward a research station whose survival systems are failing. The publisher’s description establishes the intended contrast, but it does not by itself establish the quality or pacing of the finished game.

The Resort: service work under an apocalyptic sky
At the Resort, guests expect service even as the Sun threatens to consume the world. The player is expected to rank up, earn equipment, investigate the retreat, solve puzzles, and find a way out. This setup makes the tension between routine duties and catastrophic stakes central to the premise.
#1 Best Overall
That structure may appeal if you enjoy stories that make mundane tasks feel unsettling or meaningful. It may be a poor fit if you want constant action or find repeated collection and fetch-style objectives tedious. Those are reasonable expectations to weigh, not a definitive verdict on how every player will respond.
The Facility: a research station in decline
The second storyline takes place in a failing zoological research facility. The player is among the last people alive, caring for the station while a parasite threatens it and a voice comes through the radio. The publisher frames this setting around a survival dilemma, shifting the focus from resort expectations to keeping a damaged facility going.

- Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Explore a world teeming with danger as you gather vital resources, craft essential gear, upgrade your campsite, and rebuild outposts to have somewhere to hide.
- Day Prepares You. Night Hunts You - A dynamic day-night cycle that changes the world. Use daylight wisely to explore, scavenge supplies, craft what you need, and prepare for what’s coming. When night falls, the real nightmares come out to play. More enemies appear, stronger and more aggressive than before. The landscape becomes harder to navigate with just your flashlight. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
- Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
- 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. A unique blend of horror, dark humor, and just the right touch of camp and gore where unsettling dread meets stylized charm.
- Languages – English in-game voice. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Spain) in-game text.
The contrast between the two locations gives the premise its distinctive shape: one presents a polished retreat with impossible circumstances, while the other places survival inside a deteriorating research environment. The available official description does not explain every connection between the stories, so the extent and form of that relationship should not be assumed in advance.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What do early player reactions suggest?
Steam community reactions are individual impressions rather than a representative survey or critic consensus. One recommended review described a blend of psychological horror and chore simulation, reported a little over six hours to finish without completing everything, and said the mechanics related to the plot and themes. Another reviewer marked the game not recommended and objected to repetitive item collection and fetch-style progression.

- Fight or Flight- Hunt prey, fight larger enemies and use stealth and agility to sneak past apex predators unnoticed.
- Award Winning- Category winning of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP): Prestigious Playing For The Planet Green Games Jam 2021 Award and the 'Best in Play GDC Award.
- Explore a beautiful world- Explore a living, breathing world full of unique species of plants, insects, and animals. Run, jump, climb, and glide through beautiful environments
- Uncover Hidden Mysteries- Advance through the world and complete the main story, or explore of the beaten path and embark on side quests to uncover Away's hidden mysteries
- Photo Mode- Freeze the sugar glider anywhere and move the camera while the rest of the world continues in ambient motion
That split points to a practical question for prospective players: will repeated tasks deepen the atmosphere and themes for you, or feel like an obstacle between story beats? The available comments illustrate both possibilities; they do not prove that either response is typical.
Where can you play it, and what does the Switch listing specify?
Serenity Forge links to Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox storefronts. Nintendo’s US listing describes the Switch version as digital software for one player, with an estimated 5.6 GB download. Those product details apply to that regional listing and may change.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
The same US listing names Japanese, British English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Latin American Spanish, Traditional Chinese, and American English. It lists the content descriptors Blood, Language, Mild Violence, Sexual Themes, and Use of Alcohol and Tobacco. Check the relevant store page for current availability and regional details.
What should you check before playing?
Steam launch-period posts documented dialogue softlocks, progress-blocking problems, high-contrast text, and options to reduce camera and interface movement. A separate developer post said achievement tracking was initially unavailable because of a build-script misconfiguration, was later restored, and did not recover achievements earned before the fix. These are reports about launch-period issues, not proof that they remain in the current build.
If you are buying on Steam, check the game’s current patch notes and community announcements for the state of any issue that matters to you. The launch reports also make accessibility options worth checking directly in your edition rather than assuming that every platform has identical controls or fixes.
