Choose the Roku Streaming Stick for an HD-only TV or the lowest-cost option; choose the Streaming Stick Plus for 4K HDR without Dolby Vision; and choose the Streaming Stick 4K if you want Dolby Vision or Roku’s long-range Wi-Fi design. The right pick depends on your TV’s resolution and HDR formats, the signal at the TV, and the current price—not the model name alone.
At a glance: which Roku stick fits your setup?
| Model | Best fit | Picture formats | Main reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roku Streaming Stick | HD-only TV or price-first buyer | HD, up to 1080p | Basic current stick for an HD television. Roku product listing and Roku comparison page. |
| Roku Streaming Stick Plus (3830R) | Compatible 4K HDR television | 4K; HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG | A 4K HDR step-up when Dolby Vision is not a requirement. Roku product specifications. |
| Roku Streaming Stick 4K | 4K TV owner who wants Dolby Vision or better Wi-Fi reach | 4K; Dolby Vision and HDR10+ | Roku lists Dolby Vision and long-range Wi-Fi as differentiators. Roku product listing and Roku comparison page. |
What separates the Plus from the Streaming Stick 4K?
The Plus is a 4K HDR model, not an HD stick, but Roku’s current comparison distinguishes it from the Streaming Stick 4K in two practical ways: the 4K model adds Dolby Vision and is positioned for stronger Wi-Fi reach. If your TV supports Dolby Vision and you want to use that format, choose the Streaming Stick 4K. If your TV supports 4K and standard HDR formats are sufficient, the Plus covers the stated picture formats without that upgrade.
Roku identifies the current Plus as the 2025 model, number 3830R. Its listed formats are HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, with playback up to 2160p at 60 frames per second (3840 × 2160) when the TV and content support it. See Roku’s Plus specifications.
Check the TV and HDMI input before buying
A 4K stick cannot make an HD television display 4K. To use 4K/HDR, you need a compatible TV, compatible content, and an HDMI input that supports the required copy protection. Roku’s Plus specifications call for a compatible 4K TV with an HDMI input supporting HDCP 2.2. The available format also depends on the TV: a stick’s support for a format does not add that format to a television that lacks it. Roku lists the Plus compatibility requirements.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- For a 1080p-only TV, the standard Streaming Stick is the sensible match; its 4K models’ extra resolution will not be used.
- For a 4K HDR TV without Dolby Vision, compare the Plus and 4K model by current price and Wi-Fi placement.
- For a Dolby Vision TV, the Streaming Stick 4K is the match among these three if you want Dolby Vision playback.
- Confirm that the HDMI input you plan to use supports the necessary 4K copy-protection standard.
When does the Streaming Stick 4K’s Wi-Fi matter?
Roku describes the Streaming Stick 4K as having long-range Wi-Fi and recommends it for a TV farther from the router. That is a manufacturer positioning claim, not an independent speed or range test; actual streaming quality still depends on the home network, interference, router and placement. If your current device streams reliably where the TV sits, stronger reach may not be a reason to upgrade.
Useful Plus specifications and practical details
Roku lists the Plus with dual-band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi, built-in HDMI, USB-C power, and a voice remote with TV power and volume controls. The Plus product page gives dimensions of 3.7 × 0.80 × 0.45 inches and weight of 0.90 ounces (26.0 g). Roku also lists approximately 2.5 W typical consumption while streaming 4K UHD. These figures describe the Plus model page and should not be assumed for the other sticks. Roku Streaming Stick Plus specifications.

Check the live price rather than relying on an old deal
Roku’s product listings and promotions can change, so an old advertised price is not a dependable way to choose between the three. Check the current listing for the exact model before buying. If the Plus costs close to the 4K model, Dolby Vision and Roku’s longer-range Wi-Fi positioning may make the 4K stick the better fit; if the price gap is meaningful and you do not need those distinctions, the Plus may be enough. What the specifications do not tell you
Roku’s published product information establishes the supported picture formats and its stated Wi-Fi positioning, but it does not establish that one model launches apps faster, responds more quickly, or delivers a measured Wi-Fi throughput advantage in a typical home. Do not pay extra expecting a proven speed improvement on those measures; base the upgrade on the documented format support, your TV and your network location.
