Roku says activation, account creation, and Roku support are free. Treat a request to pay for any of them as a major warning sign. Fake sites can appear when you search “roku activation” or “roku link,” sometimes using Roku branding or paid ads; the search phrase alone is not proof of fraud. Check the destination and what it asks you to do. For genuine help, go directly to a Roku site ending in roku.com, such as Roku Support.
How to recognize a Roku scam
Scammers may pose as Roku during device setup or when you look for technical help. Their pages can copy Roku logos, publish fake setup instructions, display pop-ups, collect your phone number or email, or show a fraudulent support number. Some buy search ads so a fake result appears near the top. Roku’s guidance is clear: it does not charge for activation, account creation, or support. Roku’s activation and support scam guidance explains these tactics.
- Check the full domain. Roku says its websites end in
roku.com. Do not assume a page is genuine because it uses Roku’s logo, appears in search results, or has “Roku” in its name. - Notice what the contact asks for. A fee for activation or Roku support is a red flag. So are requests for your password, Social Security number, payment details unrelated to a purchase, software installation, or remote access to your computer.
- Be wary of unsolicited urgency. A pop-up or message that pressures you to call a number or act immediately may be designed to frighten you into giving access or money. The FTC says real security pop-up warnings and messages will not ask you to call a phone number. See the FTC’s tech-support scam guidance.
- Watch for implausible offers. Roku warns about paid support subscriptions, promises of “lifetime” channel access, and schemes that link a device to a scammer’s account and then demand money to unlock it.
Roku also warns about phishing messages and pages that ask you to update payment details, disclose account credentials, or click suspicious links. Keep your account email current, use a unique password, consider setting a purchase PIN, and review account charges periodically. Roku’s UK account-security page recommends a password of at least eight characters using numbers, symbols, and upper- and lower-case letters; that is guidance on that specific regional page, not a claim about a universal current password rule. - Stop interacting with the suspicious page or pop-up. Close it without calling its number, entering payment details, or downloading anything.
- Open Roku directly. Type a known Roku address ending in
roku.comyourself, such as support.roku.com or my.roku.com, and use official support options there. - Do not pay for free Roku services. Roku says activation, account creation, and Roku support do not have a fee. A demand for payment for those services is not a legitimate Roku charge.
- Refuse risky access requests. Do not share your password or Social Security number, install software at a stranger’s direction, or let a purported support agent control your computer.
If you paid, shared a password, or allowed computer access
- Contact your bank or card issuer promptly. Ask whether the payment can be stopped or reversed, and check recent activity for unfamiliar transactions.
- Secure exposed accounts. Change your Roku and email passwords. If you reused the exposed password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. Use a trusted device if you granted remote access. The FTC also advises changing exposed and reused passwords after a tech-support scam.
- Remove software the caller installed. If you gave remote access and are unsure what changed, get help from a trusted technician rather than following instructions from the person who contacted you.
- Report the incident. File a report with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and use Roku’s official support site to report a fake Roku page or seek genuine help. The CFPB also lists the FBI, FTC, state attorney general, and local police as possible contacts for scam or fraud reports. CFPB reporting contacts
The cited Roku and FTC guidance supports removing software and securing exposed accounts, but it does not prescribe a complete computer-forensics process. If remote control was granted, avoid treating a password change alone as proof that the computer is clean.

If a Roku device or linked account looks unfamiliar
Check which email address is linked to the device at Settings > System > About. If you do not recognize it, Roku advises factory-resetting the device and setting it up again with your own Roku account. Then use a unique account password, keep the account email current, consider a purchase PIN, and periodically review charges. Roku device and account guidance
If you see a Roku-related charge you do not recognize
Do not assume every unfamiliar-looking charge is a scam. First identify who billed it and what purchase or subscription it relates to. Roku’s guidance on unrecognized charges recommends checking these possibilities:

- A free trial renewed. Check whether a trial converted into a recurring paid subscription.
- The charge came from a channel provider. If the statement names the service provider rather than Roku, contact that provider about the billing.
- A different account, device, or household member made the purchase. Check other email addresses and Roku accounts, purchase history, devices, and whether someone in your household subscribed or bought something.
- A $1 authorization is temporary. Roku says a $1 card authorization may be a payment-method validation hold that is refunded, rather than a completed purchase.
Once you identify the biller, contact the relevant provider or your bank or card issuer as appropriate. If the charge is unauthorized, ask the issuer about available steps to stop or dispute it.
What the available account-security figures do—and do not—show
Roku reported in April 2024 that unauthorized actors accessed about 15,000 user accounts using login credentials stolen from another source in a credential-stuffing attack. Roku described this as an account-security incident, not a breach of its own systems. It is historical context, not a count of Roku scams in 2026 or a measure of their current prevalence.
