Before you start streaming, check your Roku’s display type, Smart TV Experience privacy setting, browsing autoplay, and—if your player supports it—refresh-rate matching. These controls affect picture output, data collection, and what happens while you browse. The steps below follow Roku’s support documentation; menus and availability can vary by device, model, and software.
1. Keep display type on Automatic unless detection is wrong
Roku’s setup guide recommends Automatic so the player can choose a resolution that matches your TV. Roku Support puts it this way: “Navigate to Settings > Set Display Type and choose Automatic to allow Roku to choose the correct resolution that matches your TV.”
- Open Settings > Set Display Type.
- Choose Automatic, unless setup has already selected it.
- If the picture appears incorrect, select a display type your TV and connection support, then confirm that the picture looks right.
A manual change can briefly turn the screen black while the output switches. Don’t select the highest resolution simply because it is available; it must be supported by your TV and connection. Roku’s setup process also includes connecting the player and updating its software. Roku recommends using the supplied HDMI cable; some stick-style devices may need a short HDMI extender if the TV’s port location or clearance makes the connection awkward. 2. Review Smart TV Experience if you want to limit ACR
Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) can recognize shows or movies playing through connected-device inputs and support Roku’s More Ways to Watch feature. Roku documents ACR as not enabled out of the box, but it is worth checking if privacy is a priority.

- Open Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience.
- Review the ACR-related option and decide whether you want the recognition-supported features.
Turning the setting off later does not erase data collected or used while ACR was enabled; Roku says that data is retained. Treat this as a choice about future collection and feature availability, not a way to delete earlier viewing data. Roku Smart TV Experience and privacy information
3. Turn off browsing autoplay if you prefer still previews
Roku’s Auto-play video control changes what happens while navigating: with autoplay off, images appear instead of certain videos playing automatically. The setting is device-specific, so repeat the change on each Roku you use.

On compatible current-generation Roku players, Auto-adjust display refresh rate can switch the player to the native format of a movie, video, or TV show. It is an optional preference, not a setting available or relevant on every Roku.

The tradeoff is a brief black-screen flash when playback starts or stops as the video mode changes. Some apps may not apply the setting, so leave it off if you prefer to avoid mode switches or notice an unwanted interruption. Roku display and refresh-rate guidance

Ad preferences are not a universal ad-off switch
Roku’s category controls apply to certain non-video banner ads in Roku menus and screensavers. They require Personalized Ads to be enabled and do not cover video ads, ads inside partner apps, or certain ads shown to everyone. Hiding an ad replaces it with another ad, so these controls should not be treated as ad removal. Roku advertising preference information
Accessibility options depend on the viewer and device
For screen-reader access, Roku documents availability on Roku TV models and players currently sold in the US and Canada, with Roku OS 7.5 or later required. Closed captions appear only when a movie or show supports them. These are useful personal settings to explore under Settings > Accessibility, rather than changes every viewer needs to make.
