Rockwell Automation announced a definitive agreement to acquire Verve Industrial Protection on October 23, 2023. The acquisition was recorded as occurring on November 1 and publicly declared complete on November 6. Rockwell positioned Verve’s industrial asset inventory, vulnerability management, remediation platform, and professional services as additions to its operational technology (OT) cybersecurity offering.

Why did Rockwell Automation acquire Verve Industrial?

Rockwell said the deal would broaden its cybersecurity capabilities for industrial environments. Verve brought a platform for identifying and managing industrial assets and addressing vulnerabilities, along with professional services intended to support ongoing remediation and cybersecurity planning.

The strategic fit is rooted in a practical OT security problem: operators need to know which devices are present before they can assess and manage their exposure. In Rockwell’s October 23, 2023 announcement, Matt Fordenwalt, its senior vice president of Lifecycle Services, said: “The foundation of OT cybersecurity starts with visibility into assets – you can’t protect what you don’t know you have. This continues to be a critical challenge for manufacturers.”

Rockwell also cited a figure that 60% of the OT and ICS incidents studied resulted in operational disruption. The announcement attributes that statistic to a “recent Rockwell Automation report” but does not identify the report or its publication year. It should therefore be understood as a figure Rockwell cited in 2023, not a general industry rate or independently verified measure.

What Verve’s platform and services brought to Rockwell

Rockwell described Verve’s Security Center as a vendor-neutral OT endpoint-management platform for IT-OT asset inventory, vulnerability management, and remediation. The company said it was designed to inventory industrial assets while accommodating OT-specific operating constraints. These are Rockwell’s descriptions of the offering; the acquisition announcements do not establish comparative performance against other products.

  • Asset inventory: visibility into industrial endpoints and assets across IT and OT environments.
  • Vulnerability management: a way to identify and manage security weaknesses affecting those assets.
  • Remediation: platform capabilities and services aimed at addressing risks over time.
  • Professional services: support for ongoing remediation, cybersecurity roadmaps, and business-case development.

What the acquisition does—and does not—show

The announcements establish Rockwell’s stated rationale and the broad capabilities it associated with Verve. They do not provide comparative performance data, detailed product coverage, or evidence that Verve outperformed other OT security offerings. Operators evaluating products in this category would need to assess asset discovery coverage, vulnerability prioritization and remediation workflows, supported vendors and equipment, and how deployment and services fit their own industrial environments.
