Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has reportedly said that players will sometimes need to earn money in the world to move the GTA VI story forward. The examples attributed to him are boosting cars to sell and robbing places. The reporting describes occasional story progression requirements—not a cash requirement for every mission.

What Rockstar reportedly said about money in GTA 6

In a statement attributed to Nelson, money will matter more to the story than it did in previous Grand Theft Auto games. He is also quoted as saying: “There are times when you actually have to go out into the world and make money – whether you’re boosting cars and selling them or sticking places up, there will be parts of the game where you need to make money to advance the mission flow.”

That points to money serving as a condition for story progression at some points, rather than being only an optional resource for purchases. The examples—stealing cars to sell and robbing places—are illustrative; they do not establish a complete list of ways to earn the required money.

Does every GTA 6 mission require money?

No such claim appears in the reports. They describe times when players need money to advance the mission flow, not a requirement attached to every mission. The reports do not state how many such points there will be or how often they occur.

What is still unknown about the money requirements?

The available coverage does not specify the amount players must earn, which activities will qualify beyond the examples given, or what happens if a player arrives short. It also does not establish whether players can prepare by saving money beforehand or how early the game will signal a cash target.

Those details will determine how the mechanic affects pacing. A modest requirement with multiple ways to meet it could give players an open-world detour; frequent or substantial requirements could feel more like interruptions. The reports do not provide enough information to judge that balance or describe the finished gameplay.

How firmly is the claim confirmed?

The statement is reported by secondary sources, rather than established here through an official Rockstar transcript. iTechGuides’ October 7, 2026 account says the material came from a republished interview transcript and was neither the original IGN page nor an official Rockstar transcript. Accordingly, the claim should be understood as a statement attributed to Nelson in interview coverage, not as independently verified gameplay footage or a confirmed description of every mission.

Joking Joystick also reported the quote on October 7, 2026, noting that the thresholds, frequency, and full range of qualifying activities had not been detailed. Joking Joystick’s report and iTechGuides’ account support the cautious reading: earning money may be necessary at some story points, but the scope and implementation remain unspecified.
