Vlad Tenev’s forecast is about what people trade inside prediction markets—not a prediction that Bitcoin or other crypto prices will rise. The Robinhood CEO expects crypto-linked event contracts to gain share, with sports contracts potentially becoming a minority of Robinhood’s contracts within a few years, according to The Motley Fool’s October 3, 2026 report of remarks he made on CNBC on September 21. For crypto investors, the distinction matters: a prediction contract tied to Bitcoin is not the same thing as owning Bitcoin.

What did Vlad Tenev predict?

Tenev’s reported forecast concerns the mix of Robinhood’s prediction-market activity. The Motley Fool reported on October 3, 2026, that he expects sports contracts to become a minority category within a few years and that crypto-related contracts already make up a disproportionately large share of Robinhood’s prediction-market activity. The report attributes the view to remarks Tenev made on CNBC on September 21.

This is a forecast about categories within a platform’s event-contract business. It does not establish how quickly any category will grow, provide a Robinhood category-by-category time series, or specify the exact denominator behind the word “minority.” The CNBC wording is not available here as a verified transcript, so the forecast should be treated as a paraphrase of The Motley Fool’s reporting, not a verbatim quote.

Category share is not the same as total activity

Sports becoming a smaller share could happen because crypto contracts grow faster, because sports activity falls, or through some combination. A change in share alone does not show that the total number of contracts—or the dollar value traded—has risen. The report does not quantify a future Robinhood volume target.

So what does this mean for crypto investors?

It may signal that crypto-linked questions are becoming a more important product category on trading platforms. It does not, on its own, signal a bullish view on crypto assets. A prediction-market contract asks about an event or outcome; it does not give its buyer ownership of the referenced cryptocurrency or necessarily track the asset’s longer-term return.

Event contracts versus owning crypto

The Motley Fool describes short-duration contracts that ask, for example, whether Bitcoin finishes above a specified price during a 15-minute window. A person taking a position on that outcome is trading a contract whose result depends on the terms of that question. The contract and its implied odds do not transfer Bitcoin to the buyer or change who owns it.

That makes the risks different. An event contract is tied to a defined outcome and time window; owning a crypto asset exposes an investor to changes in that asset’s price and the other risks of holding it. More interest in Bitcoin-related contracts should not be read as proof that investors are buying more Bitcoin, that spot-market trading is increasing, or that crypto prices will rise.

Robinhood’s business may benefit without crypto prices rising

If higher event-contract activity persists, it could matter to Robinhood’s transaction business. But the company’s revenue from event contracts is not a return paid to people who own crypto, and the available figures do not establish that the growth will continue or that it will affect crypto-asset prices. An investor considering Robinhood shares is assessing the platform’s business; an investor considering a crypto asset is assessing that asset. Those are separate decisions.

What Robinhood’s Q2 2026 numbers show—and do not show

Robinhood’s results for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, released July 29, put prediction-market growth alongside weaker crypto revenue. The figures describe Robinhood’s business, not the performance of Bitcoin or other crypto assets.

Measure Robinhood’s Q2 2026 result What it measures
Event-contract revenue $156 million, up more than 10 times year over year Revenue Robinhood reported from event contracts
Cryptocurrency revenue $100 million, down 38% year over year Revenue Robinhood reported from cryptocurrency activity
Event contracts traded 13.6 billion A count of contracts traded during the quarter
Crypto notional volume $40 billion: $18 billion on Robinhood’s app and $22 billion on Bitstamp Dollar notional volume across the two stated venues

The contract count and crypto notional volume are different kinds of measures: 13.6 billion contracts cannot be compared directly with $40 billion in notional dollars. Revenue is different again. It reflects Robinhood’s reported business income, not the value of contracts or crypto traded and not a customer’s investment gain.

The contrast—event-contract revenue rising sharply while crypto revenue fell—shows why a prediction-market expansion should not be mistaken for a general rise in Robinhood’s crypto business. Robinhood’s chief financial officer, Shiv Verma, said in the July 29 results announcement that the company had driven new highs across equity, options, and event-contract volumes while continuing to win market share. That company statement provides context on the platform’s activity, but it is not evidence of future growth or of a crypto-price effect.

How the reported prediction-market mix is changing

The Motley Fool’s October 3 article cites Kalshi data as another indication of growing interest in crypto-related event contracts. It reports that Kalshi crypto prediction-market volume rose from $337 million in January 2026 to about $7.5 billion in August 2026. Those figures are Kalshi’s, not Robinhood’s, and do not establish Robinhood’s own category mix.

For the week ending September 20, 2026, the reported shares of Kalshi volume were:

  • Sports contracts: 21%.
  • Bitcoin contracts: 13%.
  • Bundled multi-outcome contracts: 62%.

These are category shares for one week on Kalshi, not a quarterly Robinhood breakdown. The three reported categories add to 96%; the cited report does not identify the remaining 4% here. Bundled multi-outcome contracts are a separate reported category, so the Bitcoin share alone does not capture every contract that might involve crypto. Nor should these percentages be compared directly with Robinhood’s quarterly total of 13.6 billion contracts: one is a platform-specific weekly volume mix and the other is a company-wide quarterly contract count.

Where Robinhood routes event contracts

Robinhood’s event-contract business involves exchange and clearing relationships as well as its customer-facing app. Its July 29, 2026, Q2 results describe Rothera as a CFTC-licensed exchange and clearinghouse operated through a Robinhood–Susquehanna joint venture; Rothera had processed more than 3.5 billion contracts by the date of that release.

Axios reported on September 8, 2026, that Robinhood had agreed to route some event contracts through OG.com’s exchange and clearinghouse under a multi-year arrangement. The report also said Robinhood continued routing contracts through Kalshi, ForecastEX, and Rothera. These venue relationships show that the product depends on market infrastructure and counterparties; they do not, by themselves, demonstrate how much activity any one venue will receive.

What the legal uncertainty means

Axios described the federal-versus-state regulatory question for prediction markets as unresolved in its September 8, 2026, reporting: federal derivatives regulation may intersect with state gaming oversight, and the article noted a possible Supreme Court case. That is a description of the reported legal posture at that time, not a definitive statement of the law today. Rules and litigation can affect which contracts platforms offer and where, so availability may change by jurisdiction. The cited reporting does not settle how any future ruling would affect Robinhood’s products.

What to watch next

For a clearer picture of whether Tenev’s forecast is materializing, separate platform growth from crypto-market performance and look for comparable measurements over time. Useful evidence would include:

  • Robinhood category-level contract counts or dollar volumes, reported consistently across quarters.
  • Whether the reported category mix distinguishes single-outcome crypto contracts from bundled multi-outcome products.
  • Event-contract revenue and activity in later results, alongside crypto revenue and notional volume—but kept as distinct metrics.
  • Changes in the venues Robinhood uses and in the rules or geographic availability governing its contracts.

Robinhood reported 28.4 million funded customers as of June 30, 2026. That provides company-scale context, but it does not show how many customers trade event contracts, how much they trade, or whether crypto contracts are drawing in new customers.
