A Reform UK video published on 2 October 2026 shows Robert Jenrick accusing a man in Brixton of taking a bottle of Dr Pepper from Greggs. The man denied stealing it, handed the drink back, and gave an explanation reported by The Independent. The available accounts establish the confrontation, but do not prove what happened before filming or show that the clip caused broad public backlash or political damage.
What happened in the Brixton video?
Reform UK published the video on 2 October 2026. It shows Jenrick approaching a man with a bottle of Dr Pepper and accusing him of taking it from a Greggs. In the clip, Jenrick says: “I think you just nicked that, didn’t you? Well, we just watched you take it. Do you wanna give it back?” The Independent reports that the man denied stealing the drink, then handed it back. It reports him answering Jenrick’s question about being “above the law” with: “Because they always give us drinks.” Jenrick then returned the bottle to a Greggs fridge. The Independent’s account of the exchange.

The video and contemporaneous coverage show the exchange, but do not establish what happened before the camera began recording. The allegation that the man took the drink is Jenrick’s; the man’s denial is part of the reported exchange. The available evidence does not independently settle the disputed account.

How did Jenrick and Reform UK frame the clip?
Jenrick presented the encounter as a response to shoplifting and wider disorder. In a post accompanying the video, he wrote: “Shoplifters are running riot. Parts of the country are feral. If nobody else will confront them, I will.” Reform UK likewise described the release as a focus on shoplifting on high streets. These are the politician’s and party’s stated message, rather than independent findings about this incident. Reform UK’s post and framing.

LBC reports that Jenrick argued alleged theft makes food and drink more expensive for other customers. That is his argument about the wider effects of shoplifting; the reporting does not measure any price impact from this particular bottle or encounter. LBC’s report on the confrontation and price argument.
Did the video backfire?
“Backfires” is a stronger conclusion than the available evidence supports. The accounts establish that Reform UK used the clip as political messaging and that the man denied the accusation. They do not establish how representative any criticism was, or demonstrate measurable damage to Jenrick or Reform UK from this video. A confrontation staged for political communication may invite scrutiny of its premise and presentation, but that is an interpretation—not proof of a broad public verdict.
