Paris Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2027 shows made a spectacle of gold, exposed skin and celebrity—and raised a harder question for luxury houses: how do they persuade shoppers to pay premium prices when the market is under strain? Associated Press reporter Thomas Adamson’s October 2, 2026, account captures both the runway’s visual bravura and that commercial tension.

Three visual currents shaped the Spring/Summer 2027 shows

Rather than one season-wide uniform, the AP report points to three distinct approaches: grand glamour, sensual exposure and couture-like craft applied to recognizable clothes. The contrast matters: some looks were built for maximum runway impact, while others started with familiar garments and made their construction or materials the focus.

Visual current What it looked like Examples in the AP report
Gold glamour Metallic surfaces, brocade and eveningwear with a high-shine finish Saint Laurent’s gold treatments and Matières Fécales’ gold lamé finale
Sensual exposure Bare chests, lingerie-like pieces, swimwear and robes Tom Ford, Balmain, Rick Owens and Courrèges
Craft in everyday forms Intricate surface work, unusual cuts and supple or decorative materials applied to recognizable silhouettes Balenciaga’s stitched shirts and T-shirts and bias-cut jeans; Loewe’s leather and glass-bead dresses

This is a comparison of the collections described in Adamson’s report, not a claim that every house followed the same trend.

Saint Laurent turned gold into the season’s headline image

Anthony Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent collection made metallic color its defining gesture. The AP report describes metallic cotton safari jackets and trench coats, lace cocktail dresses, brocade jackets and stilettos with serpent-shaped heels. Supermodel Anja Rubik led a finale dressed in black, providing a dark counterpoint to the show’s gold-heavy imagery.

#1 Best Overall

Vaccarello had reached a decade at the house, prompting speculation among some attendees that the show might be a farewell. AP reported that no departure had been announced; the speculation should not be mistaken for confirmation.

Exposed dressing took several forms

Tom Ford paired tailoring with skin

Tom Ford set sharply dressed looks against bare chests, fishnet, minimal swimwear and silk robes. The collection’s tension came from the contrast: polished tailoring alongside garments that revealed more than they covered.

Balmain, Rick Owens and Courrèges offered different variations

Balmain combined corsets and bras with outerwear. Rick Owens and Courrèges explored their own boudoir-inspired and cage-like interpretations, respectively, showing how exposure could read as either intimate or architectural.

Craft details moved onto familiar clothes

Some collections made luxury’s case through technique and material rather than spectacle alone. Balenciaga applied dense stitching to a shirt and a T-shirt, then cut jeans on the bias—a method that changes how fabric falls. Loewe, in Adamson’s account, emphasized supple leather and dresses made with glass beads. These examples brought decorative work into forms or materials with a connection to everyday dressing, even when the finish remained elaborate.

Other collections shifted the mood

Chloé brought texture and rainwear together

Chemena Kamali layered broderie anglaise, lace, pearls and tassels, while also showing colorful rainwear and long-brimmed fishermen’s hats. The combination joined decorative detail to practical outerwear instead of relying on evening glamour alone.

Stella McCartney put an ocean message on the runway

The collection included easy tailoring, knit forms resembling coral and denim with airbrushed dolphins. David Attenborough’s recorded voice delivered an ocean-conservation message during the show. Jennifer Lopez attended, adding star power to a presentation that also carried an environmental theme.

Issey Miyake explored the space around the body

Satoshi Kondo’s presentation centered on moving air and space. The house’s term “ma” was glossed in the AP report as “the space in between” the body and a garment—a useful description of a collection concerned with movement and the room clothes leave around their wearer.

Matières Fécales paired a populist title with luxury imagery

At Place de la République, Matières Fécales presented a show titled “The 99 Percent,” with sari-inspired draping, shredded denim and a gold lamé finale. The AP account noted the irony of a public-facing theme about the many meeting luxury fashion’s affordability problem.

Celebrity attention amplified the runway spectacle

At Saint Laurent, AP reported the presence of Catherine Deneuve, Kate Moss, Hailey Bieber and Rami Malek. Jennifer Lopez attended Stella McCartney, while Rihanna appeared at Matières Fécales. Their presence underscored fashion week’s ability to attract attention, but celebrity visibility is not the same as evidence that shoppers will buy luxury goods.

Why the spectacle met a difficult luxury market

The commercial backdrop in Adamson’s October 2, 2026, report was a sector under pressure. AP said L’Oréal had overtaken LVMH as France’s most valuable listed company, and described Saint Laurent as growing while Gucci struggled to reverse falling sales. These are time-sensitive details from the report, not a standing ranking or a forecast.

AP also attributed two market figures to Bain & Company: around 60 million customers had left luxury since 2022, and prices had risen by about 20% over two years. The figures are Bain’s as relayed by AP; they should not be read as independently verified here or as a claim about every brand, product or customer.

The tension is visible in the collections themselves. Theatrical staging and celebrity can make a show memorable, while intricate stitching, distinctive cuts and material choices offer another way to communicate what a premium garment contains. That is an interpretation of the examples in the report, not proof that either approach will reverse weaker sales or win customers back.
