Higher prices for new iPhones may make renewed models more attractive to Indian buyers, but a low asking price is not enough to establish value. In a MySmartPrice interview published on 30 September 2026, ControlZ head Yug Bhatia estimated that iPhone prices had risen by around 25% over the previous six to seven months. That is Bhatia’s estimate, not an independently measured India-wide price index. His practical advice for buyers is to weigh a phone’s condition, battery, parts history, warranty and support alongside its price.

Why higher new-iPhone prices matter to renewed-phone buyers

When a new phone costs more, a previous-generation iPhone can look like a way to get premium hardware for a lower initial outlay. Bhatia’s interview makes that case for pre-owned and refurbished devices in India. The roughly 25% price increase he cites is his estimate for the prior six to seven months, not a verified measure of every model or retailer’s pricing.

“If you compare it with the new phone today at a retail counter, 80% would take this phone if the trust issue is solved,” Bhatia said. This is his hypothetical view, not survey evidence. For a buyer, the trust question is concrete: who inspected the device, what was repaired, what condition is guaranteed, and what happens if something fails?

What ControlZ says it does when renewing phones

Bhatia describes ControlZ as sourcing devices through partners—including e-commerce companies, large-format retailers and smaller dealers—rather than buying directly from individual consumers. The company renews phones at its own facility and sells through retail partners and its website. He told MySmartPrice that ControlZ had more than 1,300 retail partners and around 700 service centres across 50 cities; these are company figures reported in the interview.

According to Bhatia, around 80% of devices ControlZ receives have some issue, including battery, display or camera problems. He says the company generally replaces batteries below 90% health and keeps those above that threshold. He also says it repairs some display damage rather than replacing the panel, that around 10–15% of displays require replacement, and that around 95% of camera modules can be reused. These figures describe ControlZ’s account of its own process; they are not independently audited rates for the company or the wider market.

The interview says ControlZ uses equivalent-quality alternative components when replacements are needed, rather than Apple-certified components. Bhatia says the company tests display brightness, contrast and RGB performance in-house. Buyers considering a renewed iPhone should therefore ask whether any component has been replaced and what “equivalent quality” means for the particular listing; the interview does not establish that every device uses the same parts or receives the same repairs.

How to assess a renewed iPhone before buying

Use the listing and written terms to establish what you are actually purchasing. A general description such as “like new” does not tell you a phone’s battery condition, repair history or remedy if it develops a fault.

  1. Identify the exact device. Confirm the iPhone model, storage capacity, seller name and the specific unit or condition grade. Compare listings for the same configuration, not just the same model name.
  2. Get condition details in writing. Ask what cosmetic marks are allowed and whether key functions have been checked. If buying in person, inspect the phone; if buying online, look for clear, listing-specific documentation and usable return terms.
  3. Ask about battery health. Find out the minimum health guaranteed at delivery and whether the battery is original or replaced. A threshold used by one seller is not a universal industry standard.
  4. Ask what repairs and parts are disclosed. Clarify whether the display, camera, battery or other components have been repaired or replaced, and whether replacement parts are Apple-certified or alternatives. Do not infer a particular phone’s parts history from a seller’s general process description.
  5. Read the warranty and exclusions. Check its duration, what faults it covers, how claims are made and who provides service. A headline warranty period alone does not explain exclusions or the remedy available.
  6. Check returns and support access. Confirm the return window, conditions for returning the device, the service route for a fault and whether support is accessible where you live.
  7. Compare the complete offer. Weigh total price against the exact model and storage, condition, battery, repair disclosure, warranty, returns, seller documentation and support reach.

These checks matter especially for online purchases, where a buyer may not be able to inspect the device before paying. The interview warns that unclear sellers or histories in the unorganised market can leave buyers with uncertain provenance or support. No universal grading standard or independent test results are established in the cited material, so compare the specific written promises rather than assuming sellers use the same definition of “renewed.”

What ControlZ’s warranty covers—and what to verify

The interview reports a 12-month warranty for the phones discussed. ControlZ’s homepage, accessed on 5 October 2026, advertises 12-month coverage for Premium Renewed devices and a 7-day warranty for Saver Series devices. Because coverage varies by product line and terms may change, check the exact product page and current written warranty before purchasing. The duration alone does not establish what is covered, what is excluded or how a claim is resolved.

Which iPhone models and prices did Bhatia highlight?

Bhatia said more than 90% of ControlZ’s business comes from iPhones and identified the iPhone 13, 14 and 15 as a useful middle range for the company’s supply-demand balance. His examples below are interview-era illustrations, not live prices or guaranteed offers; availability and asking prices can change quickly.

The iPhone 13 is one model Bhatia considers part of that middle range, but whether it is a good buy depends on the specific unit’s condition, configuration, price and terms. Compare current listings directly; the interview’s examples should not be treated as a price guide for today.

What Bhatia’s market comments do—and do not—show

Bhatia said, “For us as a brand, there is an opportunity to grow 10 times.” That is his outlook for ControlZ, not an independently verified forecast of the company’s growth or the renewed-phone market. His comments explain why the company sees an opening as new-phone prices rise, but they do not demonstrate that every renewed phone is reliable or a better value than a new one. Buyers still need to judge the individual listing and its written protections.
