Choose a wired Ring doorbell if your home has compatible doorbell wiring and you want ongoing wired power. Choose a battery model if flexible placement or avoiding wiring matters more, and you are willing to recharge it. The labels cover different generations, though: compare the exact model names and specifications rather than assuming every Ring wired or battery doorbell works the same way.

Ring wired vs. Ring battery: what is the practical difference?

The main tradeoff is power and installation. A wired model needs compatible low-voltage doorbell wiring. A battery model can be installed without that wiring, but its rechargeable battery eventually needs charging. Some battery models can also connect to compatible existing wiring for continuous charging, so battery-powered does not necessarily mean permanently untethered.

This comparison uses Ring’s US product information. Names, availability, electrical standards, subscription terms, and included accessories can differ by market.

Which Ring doorbell should you buy?

Choose wired if compatible wiring is already in place

A wired doorbell is a practical choice if the existing doorbell circuit meets the requirements for the specific model you want. It avoids the routine of taking the unit down to recharge a battery. Confirm the transformer output before buying: Ring lists different requirements for different generations, so one model’s specification is not a safe substitute for another’s.

Choose battery if placement flexibility matters more

A battery model can suit a location without usable doorbell wiring or an installation where running or adapting wiring is undesirable. Its tradeoff is recharging. Ring’s cited Battery Video Doorbell can also be hardwired to a compatible existing system for continuous charging, which may suit a buyer who wants that model’s flexibility but has suitable wiring.

Check the exact model and generation

“Wired” and “battery” are broad categories, not single specification sets. Ring’s support page for the older Video Doorbell Wired describes a 1080p model, while Ring’s current lineup includes newer 2K wired and battery products. Do not treat the older model’s video specification as representative of every wired Ring doorbell.

Battery Video Doorbell (cited model) Built-in rechargeable battery; can connect to an existing doorbell system or transformer rated 8–24 VAC, 40 VA maximum, 50/60 Hz for continuous charging. Can you hardwire a Ring battery doorbell?

For Ring’s cited Battery Video Doorbell, yes: Ring lists compatible existing wiring as an option for continuous charging. Its stated requirement is 8–24 VAC, 40 VA maximum, 50/60 Hz. That is not a universal specification for all Ring battery models; check the exact product’s requirements.

How often do you have to recharge a Ring battery doorbell?

Ring’s cited product information confirms that the battery is rechargeable but does not establish a guaranteed or typical interval between charges. It is therefore not possible to give a dependable fixed schedule from that information. If removing the doorbell to recharge it would be inconvenient, consider a compatible wired model or confirm whether the particular battery model supports wired continuous charging.

Do Ring doorbells need a subscription?

Ring says live viewing and answering notifications are available without a subscription. Saving, reviewing, and sharing captured video requires an eligible Ring plan. Plan names, recording duration, and feature eligibility can change and vary by market, so check Ring’s current local plan details if recorded clips are important to your decision. See [Ring subscription plans].

Will a wired Ring doorbell ring the home’s indoor chime?

Do not assume that it will. Ring specifically says the Wired Doorbell 2K does not activate the home’s internal chime and points customers to Ring Chime or Chime Plus for in-home notifications. That behavior should not be generalized to every wired model; check the chime compatibility information for the exact doorbell.

What to check before choosing

  • Wiring: Is there existing doorbell wiring, and does its transformer meet the exact model’s voltage and VA requirements?
  • Charging: Are you comfortable removing a battery model to recharge it, or does that model support compatible wired continuous charging?
  • Generation: Are you comparing the full model names and their own video specifications, rather than “wired” and “battery” as if each were one product?
  • Indoor alerts: Does the particular model activate your existing chime, or will you need another notification device?
  • Recordings: Do you need to save and review video, which requires an eligible Ring plan?
