Ring’s first smart lock has four everyday unlocking options: fingerprint, keypad PIN, the Ring app, and Alexa. If its battery runs down, Ring says a built-in Backup Power Dial can power the keypad so you can enter a PIN. The lock was announced on October 7, 2026, but it is not yet available to buy: Amazon expects U.S. availability in early 2027, and Ring’s product page says required FCC authorization is still pending.
How can you unlock the Ring Smart Lock?
Ring lists four routine entry methods. The Backup Power Dial is a separate emergency measure for battery depletion, not a fifth everyday unlocking method.
- Fingerprint: Use the lock’s fingerprint reader.
- PIN: Enter a code on the backlit touchscreen keypad.
- Ring app: Unlock through the app; Ring also says the app records lock activity.
- Alexa: Use Alexa voice control with a supported Echo or Alexa setup.
These are launch claims from Amazon’s October 7, 2026 announcement and Ring’s product page. No independent performance testing was established in the launch coverage.

Ring says you can twist the built-in Backup Power Dial until the keypad turns on, then enter a PIN. This is intended to restore enough power to use the keypad in an emergency; it is not a replacement for the lock’s normal power source. The launch materials do not establish a battery-life estimate or independent reliability results.

Ring founder Jamie Siminoff told TechCrunch that a rarely used house and concern about a battery dying helped motivate the product. That explains the design problem Ring says it set out to address; it does not demonstrate how often batteries fail or how reliably the lock works. TechCrunch’s October 7, 2026 launch report quotes him saying, “I struggled because this particular house will get used very little, and I know the freaking battery will die on it.”
What does the lock require to install and connect?
Amazon says the lock is designed to fit a standard single-cylinder deadbolt and requires no additional wiring. It connects through Amazon Sidewalk, which Ring says is required to use the lock. Sidewalk coverage depends on location and may be interrupted, so availability of the network—and therefore dependable connected features—should not be assumed everywhere.

The launch announcement and current product page describe features and intended compatibility, but they do not provide an independent test of performance. The reviewed launch materials also do not establish battery life, a security certification, or comparative results against other smart locks. Those details should not be inferred from the four entry methods or the emergency keypad feature.
