If your Ring Doorbell sends phone alerts but the indoor chime stays silent, first check that the Ring app is set for the chime you actually have. Then confirm your exact doorbell model supports that chime. Wired and battery-powered models use different setup options, and some Ring doorbells cannot ring an in-home chime at all.
1. Identify your doorbell and in-home chime
Before changing settings, confirm which Ring Doorbell model you have and whether it is battery-powered or wired. Also identify the indoor equipment: a mechanical chime with a bell and hammer, a digital chime that plays tones through a speaker, or no in-home chime. A plug-in adapter or wiring that bypasses the chime can also affect the setup.
Ring says the chime model and power information may be printed inside the chime cover. Do not remove a cover or handle wiring while the circuit is powered. If you are unsure what type of chime or wiring you have, ask a qualified professional to identify it.
2. Match the Ring app setting to the chime
Open the Ring app, select the doorbell, then go to Device Settings > In-home Chime Settings. The available options vary by model. Ring’s in-home chime troubleshooting guide describes these configuration paths:
#1 Best Overall
- Hear when someone's there — Receive notifications when motion is detected by your cameras or someone rings your doorbell.
- Real-time alerts, clear as a bell — With an upgraded speaker, get notified throughout your home with louder, clearer alerts.
- Set up in a snap — Simply plug Chime (3rd Gen) into a standard wall outlet for easy setup.
- Sleek, elegant design — Curved edges and slim profile create a modern look that fits your space.
- Customizable sound profiles — Personalize tones, volume, and snooze settings.
For a battery-powered Ring Doorbell
If available, try Automatic Chime Detection. Otherwise, open Advanced Settings and choose the setting that matches the actual chime: None, Mechanical, Digital Type 1, or Digital Type 2. Test the chime in the app and follow any prompts if it rings only partly or does not ring.
For a wired Ring Doorbell
In In-home Chime Settings, select Mechanical, Digital, or None, as applicable. Make sure the in-home chime option is enabled if the app shows a toggle, save the setting, wait for it to update, and test again. Choosing a digital setting for a mechanical chime—or the reverse—can prevent the expected sound.

3. Check whether your exact model supports the chime
Not every Ring Doorbell supports an existing in-home chime. Ring’s compatibility list covers battery-powered and Power over Ethernet (PoE) doorbells, and compatibility can vary by model family and region. Check the exact model shown in the Ring app against its matching compatibility information. If Ring lists your model as unsupported, changing the app setting will not make that in-home chime work.
4. If the model is compatible, check setup and power
When the app setting is correct and the model supports the chime, the remaining issue may involve wiring, an obstructed chime mechanism, or an incompatible power supply. Ring’s power troubleshooting guidance publishes these broad ranges:

| Multiple doorbells | 16 VAC, 30 VA |
These are Ring’s published guidance, not universal requirements or a substitute for the instructions for your specific doorbell and chime. Compare the transformer and chime ratings with the exact model’s compatibility guidance before changing parts. Ring warns that an incompatible transformer or in-home chime kit could damage devices.
For a mechanical chime, Ring also advises checking that wires or accessories are not blocking its moving parts. Wiring layouts differ by model; consult Ring’s battery doorbell wiring diagrams where relevant rather than guessing at connections.

Electrical safety
Turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before inspecting wiring. Ring cautions users to use care and notes that local laws or building codes may require installation by a qualified electrician. Do not bridge doorbell terminals as a general test: Ring specifically excludes that test when the in-home chime has been bypassed or the doorbell is wired directly to a transformer. If the wiring, transformer, or safe test procedure is unclear, stop and contact a qualified electrician.
