Review agent-written code with three distinct gates: use property checks to probe an explicit rule across generated inputs, pinned fixtures to control test setup and cleanup, and a flaky freeze to keep intermittent checks visible without trusting them as blockers or leaving them quarantined indefinitely. This is a practical review workflow synthesized from official Hypothesis and pytest guidance—not an established standard or a guarantee that a patch is correct.

What the three gates are meant to establish

Each gate answers a different review question. Property checks look for behavioral defects across a meaningful input range. Pinned fixtures make the test’s starting conditions and cleanup repeatable. A flaky freeze addresses whether a test result is reliable enough to influence a merge decision.

Use the gates as a way to inspect evidence, not as a score or a substitute for understanding the patch. They do not prove correctness or eliminate all regressions.

Gate Main question Review evidence Common limitation
Property checks Does the rule hold across meaningful inputs? An explicit invariant or reference behavior, plus generated failing examples Generated examples do not prove all possible inputs.
Pinned fixtures Does the test start from controlled conditions and clean up? Explicit fixture data, dependency versions where relevant, and isolated setup and teardown Over-pinning can hide behavior across supported environments.
Flaky freeze Is the result reliable enough to block or approve a patch? Failure history, a reproducible case, an owner, and a restoration plan Retries or quarantine can conceal a real defect if they become permanent.

This comparison is a review framework, not a benchmark or official standard. The sources discussed here are official Python testing documentation; apply the same ideas in other ecosystems only after checking the relevant tools and their semantics.

Gate 1: Check a property across inputs

Write down the contract first

A property-based test states a rule that should hold across a range of inputs, then generates examples to probe it. Hypothesis presents this as a complement to ordinary unit tests, not a universal replacement. Start with a contract that can be stated plainly: encoding and then decoding preserves a value, a transformation maintains an invariant, or an optimized function agrees with a slower trusted implementation. See the Hypothesis introduction and the Hypothesis project repository.

For an agent patch, connect the property to the changed behavior. A test that generates arbitrary inputs without a meaningful expected rule may exercise code without giving reviewers useful evidence. A property should make clear what must remain true and, where applicable, what trusted behavior acts as the reference.

Use generated failures as debugging evidence

When a generated case fails, inspect the minimized example and decide whether it exposes a defect the patch introduced. Hypothesis is designed to simplify failing examples, making a failure easier to investigate. Preserve the case as a focused regression check when that helps prevent the same defect from returning.

The Hypothesis tutorial documents a default of 100 generated examples per test, configurable with max_examples. That is a tool default, not a coverage guarantee or a measure of confidence; more examples cannot compensate for a vague property or an input strategy that misses important cases. See the tutorial.

Gate 2: Pin the conditions that matter

What “pinned fixtures” means here

“Pinned fixtures” is not a formal pytest feature in the documentation covered here. In this workflow, it means making the test’s important inputs and environment explicit and repeatable: stable fixture data, controlled external state, and known dependency versions when version drift could affect the result. Treat that as a review policy, not a built-in pinning mechanism.

Inspect setup and cleanup together

pytest recommends pairing fixture setup with teardown and structuring state-changing actions so each has its own cleanup. If a later setup action fails, isolating actions this way reduces the chance that earlier state is left behind. Review the test’s full lifecycle: does it start from controlled data, clean up what it changes, and leave the environment clean even after failure? See pytest’s fixture guidance.

Pay particular attention when generated examples share a process or depend on mutable resources. Hypothesis identifies hidden global state, filesystem or database state that is not reset between inputs, and unmanaged randomness as sources of flaky behavior. Reset or model mutable state within the test so one generated example cannot contaminate the next. See Hypothesis guidance on flaky failures.

Gate 3: Freeze promotion of a flaky check

Keep an intermittent result visible

“Have you ever had a test fail, and then you re-run it, only for it to magically pass?” That is the practical problem behind a flaky test. Hypothesis documentation describes one as a test “which might behave differently when called again.” Nondeterminism makes failures harder to reproduce, undermines shrinking, and obstructs effective exploration. See Hypothesis’s flaky-failure documentation.

For agent-patch review, a flaky freeze is a temporary policy: once a check is known to be intermittent, do not newly promote it to a blocking gate until its failure is understood. Keep its result visible, capture relevant run details, assign an owner, and set a review point for restoring the check. This term and policy are a workflow recommendation; pytest and Hypothesis do not define a feature called a “flaky freeze.”

Do not treat retries or quarantine as a fix

A retry may reduce disruption, but a passing retry does not prove that the test or patch is sound. pytest warns that non-strict xfail can become a dangerous manual quarantine if it remains in place. Diagnose and address likely causes such as uncontrolled state, ordering dependencies, shared globals, timing sensitivity, or incomplete cleanup. pytest’s flaky-test guidance discusses causes and mitigation options.

When deciding whether a check can return to blocking status, look for evidence that the failure has a reproducible explanation or that the underlying source of nondeterminism has been addressed. A freeze without ownership or a restoration decision risks becoming an invisible permanent exception.

Apply the gates to an agent patch

  1. Choose the behavior to protect. Identify a changed contract and express it as an invariant, round trip, or comparison with trusted behavior.
  2. Probe meaningful inputs. Use generated examples alongside focused unit tests; inspect and retain useful failing cases.
  3. Control the starting state. Make fixture data and relevant dependencies explicit, isolate state-changing setup, and pair it with cleanup.
  4. Check repeatability. Look for hidden globals, external state that is not reset, unmanaged randomness, ordering assumptions, and timing sensitivity.
  5. Make the merge decision match the evidence. If a check is intermittent, keep it visible and owned, but do not newly rely on it as a blocker until the failure is understood; define when it will be reviewed for restoration.

Across the gates, compare the defect class a check can catch, how a failure can be replayed, whether setup and cleanup isolate state, its runtime and CI cost, and whether its current status blocks merging or is temporarily monitored. Those are review questions, not published effectiveness measurements.

What these gates cannot establish

Property testing samples generated examples rather than exhaustively proving behavior. Controlled fixtures improve repeatability but may conceal compatibility problems if dependencies or environments are pinned too narrowly. A flaky freeze preserves awareness of an unreliable signal; it does not make that signal trustworthy. The reviewed documentation establishes no broader prevalence, impact, or effectiveness statistic for these practices, so none should be inferred from the example count or the workflow itself.
