GrandCentral’s core idea was simple: give people one number to share, then use it to route incoming calls to their existing home, work, and mobile phones. Its web-managed call routing, centralized voicemail, live call screening, and caller blocking made it an early phone-management service—not a replacement for the phones themselves. Google acquired GrandCentral in 2007 and announced Google Voice as its successor in 2009.

What GrandCentral did

GrandCentral connected a single number to phones a user already had. Google’s July 2, 2007 announcement described rules that could make the number ring all, some, or none of those phones, including rules based on who was calling. The service also brought voicemail into a central inbox accessible on the web, offered call screening and caller blocking, and let users move an active call between a cell phone and a desk phone. Google’s 2007 announcement framed the service as a way to integrate existing numbers and voicemail boxes into one account.

How the service worked for callers and users

One number, selective routing

Rather than giving callers a list of separate home, office, and mobile numbers, a user could share the GrandCentral number and configure which phones should ring. The routing could vary according to the caller, giving users more control than simply forwarding every call to one destination.

Central voicemail and screening

Calls that were not answered could go to a central voicemail box, which users could access online. Live screening let a user listen while a caller left a message before deciding whether to take the call. Caller blocking was another advertised control.

Moving an active call

Google also said a user could switch a call between a cell phone and a desk phone. This made GrandCentral more than a forwarding number: it was intended to manage how calls reached a person across existing devices.

What a contemporary review did—and did not—establish

A June 2007 consumer review described GrandCentral as a web-managed number that forwarded calls to existing landline, mobile, or office phones, and said special equipment was not required. The reviewer also explicitly left important edge cases untested, including what would happen if two phones were answered at once and how caller ID behaved on outgoing calls. Those questions should be treated as unanswered by that review, not as proven defects or verified features. The contemporary review offers a useful snapshot of the service’s appeal and its testing limits, rather than a comprehensive technical validation.

GrandCentral’s transition to Google Voice

Google acquired GrandCentral in July 2007. On March 11, 2009, Google announced Google Voice and said GrandCentral users would be the first users, with instructions to move to the new service. Google described GrandCentral’s single number, web-accessible voicemail inbox, and live screening as features carried forward in the predecessor experience. The 2009 announcement also said Google Voice added voicemail transcripts, searchable SMS history, and low-priced international calls; those are historical statements, not current feature or pricing information. Google’s Google Voice announcement documents that transition.

Was GrandCentral useful?

For someone managing several existing phones, GrandCentral’s central promise was practical: give out one number, decide which devices ring for which calls, and keep voicemail in one place. Call screening, blocking, and handoff between a cell and desk phone rounded out a coherent phone-management concept. A contemporary user-oriented post captured the appeal as sharing “a single number rather than a whole list of them,” while describing centralized voicemail and call transfer as useful aspects of the service. That 2007 user-oriented discussion is audience perspective, not an official specification.

The evidence supports judging GrandCentral as a historically notable service built around coordinating existing phones, not as a current product recommendation. Google’s 2009 transition announcement establishes that GrandCentral users were directed toward Google Voice; these historical sources do not establish Google Voice’s availability, feature set, or terms today.
