If you already own Dragon Quest XI S on the original Nintendo Switch, the Switch 2 edition is a separate purchase, not an upgrade. Nintendo has said it has no plans to sell an upgrade pack. For players who have not yet played the game, or who want a fresh playthrough on Switch 2 hardware, the Definitive Edition remains a substantial single-player JRPG with a real choice between graphics and frame rate.
This assessment draws on Nintendo’s and Square Enix’s published information and one published European review. It is not based on hands-on testing of the Switch 2 edition, so the performance figures below are the publishers’ stated targets, not measurements.
What the Switch 2 edition includes
Nintendo lists the Switch 2 edition with a release date of 24 September 2026 and categorizes it as a single-player RPG. According to Nintendo, it carries over the additions from the original Definitive Edition:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Additional party-member story chapters.
- Japanese voices and additional English voices.
- The ability to switch between 3D and 2D presentation.
- An orchestral score.
Nintendo also lists three item sets among the included content: the Trodain Set, the Baby Boar Set and the Happy Adventurer Set. The Switch 2 release adds optimization modes that prioritize either graphics or performance, which are covered in their own section below.
#1 Best Overall
- The eleventh installment in the fabled DRAGON QUEST series, taking the tale of the legendary heroes right back to its origins, comes to Nintendo Switch 2!
- What does it mean to be a hero? A young lad from a country village sets out to find the answer to this question, embarking on an epic adventure that will lead him to uncover the secrets that lie at the heart of his world.
- DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 contains all of the content added in the original Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch, including: new story chapters where the party members take center stage, Japanese voices and additional English voices, the ability to switch between 3D and 2D mode, and an orchestral score.
- This new edition for Nintendo Switch 2 also introduces new optimization modes, allowing you to prioritize graphics or performance.
- GAME-KEY CARD. 30 GB - Full game download via internet required.
What the original Switch version offered
Nintendo’s original Switch listing presents the game as a turn-based RPG with HD or 16-bit visuals, symphonic or synthesized music, English or Japanese audio, character-focused stories, visits to past Dragon Quest worlds, Draconian Quest difficulty and Photo Mode. These are the publisher’s feature descriptions. They do not indicate how well any of those features perform.
The Switch 2 edition’s listed additions above do not mention Draconian Quest or Photo Mode. If either matters to you, check the Switch 2 store page for those features before buying.

Save data does not carry between versions
Nintendo states that save data is incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 editions, so progress made in one version cannot be continued in the other. In practice:
- A Switch 2 playthrough starts from the beginning of the game.
- If you are partway through on Switch, you can keep playing that save on Switch or begin again on Switch 2.
- Owning both versions means maintaining two separate, unconnected saves.
Graphics or Performance: the two Switch 2 modes
Square Enix’s support FAQ specifies two optimization modes on Switch 2 and says the game content is the same in both, with graphics specifications differing by console. These figures are Square Enix’s stated targets, not independent measurements.
Rank #4
- Relic Expedition Cycle – Throughout their journey in the kingdom of Norgan, the Arisen must unearth and appraise forgotten relics to unlock powerful new weapons and skills.
- New Dungeon Challenges – The 12 freshly uncovered Lost Rites dungeons house trials designed by the Pathfinder to sharpen the Arisen’s skills and recover rare equipment once held by past Arisen that now lay dormant.
- Deeper Character Customization – New tattoo and hair options have been added to the already robust character creation tool in Dragon’s Dogma 2 so Arisen and Pawns can have even deeper personalization.
- Now on Nintendo Switch 2 – Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen brings the classic fantasy world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 and the Dark Arisen Expansion to the Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time.
- Pre-order Bonuses – The Norgan Fashion Set - Northern Attire will be available as a pre-order bonus, which can be accessed via in-game storage at launch.
| Mode | Stated resolution | Stated frame rate | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance | 1080p | 60 fps | Smoother motion, with a lower resolution image. |
| Graphics | 1440p | 30 fps | Sharper image, at half the stated frame rate. |
Dragon Quest XI S is a turn-based RPG, so the frame-rate gap is likely to matter most while moving through towns and the overworld, and during cinematic scenes, more than during turn-by-turn battles. A practical way to choose is to prioritize Graphics if you care most about how the world looks, and Performance if you spend long stretches walking around. Whether the difference is noticeable on your own screen is something only you can judge by playing in each mode; no independent comparison is cited here.

The two products differ in hardware support, and that difference matters more than the list of features:
Best Value
- Key Features Enhanced Graphics & Performance Enjoy improved textures, faster load times, and seamless gameplay tailored for Nintendo Switch 2’s upgraded hardware.
| Version | Runs on original Switch | Runs on Switch 2 | Performance and Graphics modes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Switch version | Yes | Listed by Nintendo as supported on Switch 2, with behavior described as consistent with Switch | Not stated in Nintendo’s original Switch listing |
| Switch 2 edition | No. Nintendo states it cannot be played on the original Switch | Yes, Switch 2 only | Performance (1080p, 60 fps) and Graphics (1440p, 30 fps), per Square Enix’s support FAQ |
Backward compatibility means the original version can be played on Switch 2. It does not turn that copy into the Switch 2 edition, so buying the Switch 2 edition is a decision separate from whether the original runs on your console.
What reviewers have said
Nintendo Life’s European review, written by Mitch Vogel and published 24 September 2026, says Dragon Quest XI S remains one of the strongest examples of the classic JRPG. The same review finds the Switch 2 version anticlimactic for existing owners and says its value proposition is discouraging. This is one reviewer’s evaluation, not a consensus, and not a test conducted for this article.
Who should buy it
- New to the game and playing on Switch 2: the Switch 2 edition is the version to consider, with the Definitive Edition additions and a choice between Performance and Graphics modes.
- Finished the Switch version and want more: the Switch 2 edition means a new playthrough, not a continuation. Weigh the reviewer’s view that the Switch 2 version is anticlimactic for existing owners against the cost of a second purchase.
- Partway through on Switch: keep that save where it is, or start over on Switch 2 with the save limits described above.
- Switch 2 owner who already has the Switch copy: the original can be played on Switch 2, so the Switch 2 edition is worth buying only if its additions and modes justify a replay.
