Donald Trump’s apparent thaw toward Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei follows months of hostility over Anthropic’s limits on Pentagon use of its AI models. Trump has not explained a private change of heart. Publicly, he says a long dinner changed his view; the “revenge of the nerd” idea is a commentator’s speculation about Amodei’s recognizable public image, not a documented motive.

What changed between Trump and Anthropic?

The shift is visible in Trump’s public statements and appearances. In February, Trump criticized Anthropic on Truth Social, referring to “left wing nut jobs” while echoing Pentagon complaints that the company would not allow unrestricted Department of Defense use of its models.

Anthropic’s restrictions included safeguards against autonomous weapons and spying on Americans. Pentagon officials considered those limits unacceptable, creating a public clash over how far the military should be allowed to use commercial AI.

On September 29, 2026, Trump appeared with Amodei at a White House artificial-intelligence event. The contrast with his February criticism is the basis for headlines saying that Trump now “likes” Anthropic’s CEO.

What Trump said about his dinner with Dario Amodei

Trump told Time that he had “a dinner with Dario for two and a half hours.” He said the conversation changed his impression of Amodei:

“I spoke to him about his views, and they’re much different, I think, than what is portrayed in the media.”

Trump also called Amodei a “very smart guy,” said he was “maybe different than I thought,” and added, “no, he understands.” Those are Trump’s stated reasons for the warmer public tone. They do not establish what was discussed at the dinner or whether Anthropic changed its policy.

The public timeline

Date Public event What it shows
February 2026 Trump criticized Anthropic on Truth Social and echoed Pentagon objections to its restrictions on Department of Defense use. Open hostility toward the company’s safety limits.
September 29, 2026 Trump appeared with Amodei at a White House AI event. A visible change in public presentation.
After the dinner Trump described a two-and-a-half-hour dinner and praised Amodei’s intelligence and understanding. Trump’s own account of why his view softened.

Why the “revenge of the nerd” explanation appeared

Gizmodo commentator Matt Novak connects the episode to Revenge of the Nerds, the 1984 comedy in which Robert Carradine played Lewis Skolnick. The joke compares the film’s instantly recognizable nerd styling with Amodei’s glasses and his camera-facing public persona.

The theory is that Trump, who is unusually attentive to television, movies and visual presentation, may find Amodei a useful, recognizable “nerd” who can personify artificial intelligence for a general audience. That is an interpretation of appearances, not evidence that Trump said he befriended Amodei for that reason.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

Documented facts

  • Trump moved from public criticism of Anthropic to a friendly appearance with Amodei.
  • He described a private dinner lasting two and a half hours.
  • He publicly praised Amodei as very smart and said Amodei’s views differed from how they had been portrayed.
  • Anthropic’s dispute with the Pentagon concerned safeguards involving autonomous weapons and spying on Americans.

Unresolved questions

  • There is no public account of the dinner’s full substance.
  • No available source establishes that Anthropic removed or changed its safeguards.
  • No source establishes Trump’s private motive.
  • The image-based “nerd” explanation competes with a straightforward policy, bargaining or relationship explanation.

Did Amodei call himself the “nerd” in Revenge of the Nerds?

No. In an interview with Nicolai Tangen, Amodei was asked whether Anthropic represented a “revenge of the nerd” story. He declined that framing, saying he was reluctant to set different groups against one another and that different kinds of people have different skills.

His answer rejects the idea of turning the company’s dispute into a simple battle between nerds and their opponents. It also makes clear that the film comparison belongs to the commentary around the story, not to Amodei’s own description of Anthropic.

So why did Trump attack Anthropic and then meet Amodei?

The record supports several possibilities without proving any one of them. Trump says the dinner persuaded him that Amodei’s views were different from their media portrayal. The change could therefore reflect a personal conversation, a policy discussion, or an offer or assurance that has not been made public.

The “revenge of the nerd” theory adds an image explanation: Amodei may fit a familiar visual role that Trump finds effective on camera. Nothing currently shows that appearance outweighed the Pentagon dispute, or that Trump’s policy position has changed. The safest conclusion is narrower: Trump’s public attitude softened after meeting Amodei, while the reason remains uncertain.
