RetroDriveAA is the app that most closely matches the description of a sideloaded retro-gaming setup for Android Auto. Its developer describes it as a DOSBox-based app that can share a game library and save states between a phone and a car display. But the developer’s installation details may have changed, and Google’s current rules limit Android Auto games to parked use and trusted app sources. The app’s availability and compatibility with a particular car are not established.
What RetroDriveAA does
In an April 4, 2026 post, the developer described RetroDriveAA as a DOSBox-based app with both phone and Android Auto modes. The developer says it can import ZIP game files, share its library and save states between phone and car, and use a phone as a remote controller. A public GitHub profile also lists RetroDriveAA as a DOSBox emulator for Android Auto.
Those are developer descriptions, not independently verified test results. The available information does not establish gameplay performance, compatibility with specific phones or head units, or whether the app is currently available to install.
It does not include games
The developer says RetroDriveAA does not bundle games. Users supply their own files and should only run software they own or have permission to use. That is the developer’s guidance, not legal advice; rights and restrictions can depend on the game and jurisdiction.

Android Auto games are for when the car is parked
Google announced on September 21, 2026 that the games category for Android Auto and Android Automotive OS had moved from beta to general availability. Google says Android Auto games are supported on devices running Android 15 or higher. This platform support does not certify RetroDriveAA or confirm that it is available through an approved store.
Games are parked apps, not an option for passengers or drivers to use while the vehicle is moving. Google says Android Auto restricts parked-app activity during motion or other active user-experience restrictions. Its Android Auto overview says parked apps are automatically exited when motion is detected. Google also requires game audio to stop when driving begins and prevents it from being unpaused while the vehicle is moving.

The developer’s April 2026 post described an APK on GitHub for Android 13 and below that required Kinginstaller, and a beta-registration route for Android 14 and above. That is a dated description, not a current compatibility chart or a guarantee that either route still works.

Google’s Android Auto guidance says apps for use in real vehicles must come from a trusted source, naming Google Play and ONE store. The available information does not explain how the developer’s sideload and beta routes fit that requirement. Do not assume that installing an APK on a phone will make it eligible to launch on an Android Auto car display. Check current app availability and Google’s current requirements before installing, and do not rely on an old APK or registration instruction if it is no longer offered by the developer.

Google says car displays support touch and that many users prefer a connected gamepad. A Bluetooth controller is therefore a possible accessory category, but the available information does not confirm that RetroDriveAA supports any particular controller—or that a controller is required. Check the app’s current instructions and test compatibility while parked; no specific phone, head unit, or controller combination is established here.

Google’s general Android Auto games announcement applies to games built and declared for the platform and reviewed against its quality guidelines. It does not establish that RetroDriveAA has passed that review, nor does it guarantee that the app will work on a given vehicle display.
