Start by finding out whether the conversation was archived or deleted, because the two cases have different outcomes. An archived conversation can usually be restored from inside the messaging app. A deleted message can come back only if a backup made before the deletion exists, and Samsung’s support guidance does not promise recovery without one.
Step 1: Check whether the conversation was archived
Archiving hides a thread without removing it. Google Messages has an Archived view, and archived conversations can be restored from it. Before you assume a message is gone, check there.
- Open Google Messages on the Galaxy phone.
- Open the Archived view from the app’s main menu.
- Open the conversation you need and restore it.
If the thread does not appear in Archived, it was either deleted or never archived. If you use Samsung Messages instead of Google Messages, look for the archive option in that app’s own menu, since its labels and steps can differ.

Google’s help documentation states the rule that matters most for deleted conversations: “If you use Google Messages as your default messaging app, deleted conversations will also be deleted from your device.” Deleting a thread in that app is therefore not a reversible hide action.

Samsung’s recovery guidance takes the same position from the other direction. The route it offers depends on the messaging app in use and may involve restoring from an existing backup. The useful question is therefore not “can I undelete this?” but “does a backup from before the deletion exist?”
Step 2: Find a backup made before the deletion
A backup helps only if it was turned on and completed before the messages were deleted. A restore generally brings back the contents as they were on the backup’s date, so choose a restore point that predates the deletion. Samsung’s recovery guidance names three possible routes: Samsung Cloud, Google Drive, and Smart Switch.

Samsung Cloud
Samsung Cloud’s backup list includes text, multimedia, and enhanced messages. Samsung cautions that some large messages may not be backed up, and that support varies by country, carrier, and device model. If a message is missing after a restore, a size limit or an unsupported setup on your model is one possible explanation.
Google Drive
Samsung’s recovery guidance lists Google Drive as a possible route, depending on the messaging app. The sources reviewed for this article do not describe what Google Drive backs up for messages or what its limits are. Open the backup settings on your own phone and confirm that message data is included before relying on it.

Smart Switch
Smart Switch is Samsung’s tool for backup, restore, and transfer. Samsung Support Korea material lists selectable message backup periods: all messages, the recent two years, 12 months, six months, three months, and 30 days. Choosing a period determines how far back the backup reaches, so a shorter window may not include older deleted messages. Because this guidance comes from Samsung’s Korean support pages, confirm the options shown on your own device.

Changing phones or messaging apps
If you are moving messages to a new Galaxy phone, Smart Switch is the transfer route Samsung describes, and an existing account backup may serve the same purpose. Even then, a message may not appear in every destination app in the same form, so check the new phone’s messaging app after the transfer finishes.

Samsung Messages is also changing in the United States. The Associated Press reported on April 6, 2026 that Samsung would discontinue Samsung Messages service in July 2026 and advised U.S. users to move to Google Messages. Samsung’s statement said this guidance applied only to the U.S. market. That July 2026 date has now passed, so confirm the current status of Samsung Messages in your app or with Samsung Support before making any region-specific decision.

If no backup exists
None of the official guidance establishes a reliable way to recover deleted messages without a backup made before the deletion. Check any other devices or accounts you control, such as a backup on an older phone or a linked account, but do not assume they hold a copy of the thread. Be cautious with third-party recovery software: the official guidance does not show that such tools can restore deleted Galaxy messages.

Once you know which route applies, the decision is simple: archived threads are restored inside the app, deleted messages depend on a pre-deletion backup, and the backup’s contents and limits decide what comes back.
