You can retrieve photos from a lost phone only if a copy was already synced, backed up, or saved elsewhere. Start by checking the photo accounts used on the phone from a trusted browser or another device. An account portal cannot fetch an original that existed only on a phone you can no longer access.
First, check the photo accounts linked to the phone
Before concluding that pictures are gone, identify whether the lost phone was an iPhone or Android, which photo apps you used, which accounts were signed in, and whether photo backup or sync was enabled. Try every account you may have used: a valid account with an empty library may simply be the wrong one.
iPhone: check iCloud Photos
- Open iCloud.com/photos in a trusted browser.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used on the missing iPhone.
- Review the library, albums, and any shared library available from the web interface.
Apple says iCloud.com displays the iCloud Photos library and albums. If the pictures appear there, a cloud copy is available even though the phone is missing. This check only finds photos that were in iCloud Photos; it does not retrieve images that remained solely on the handset. Apple Support: View your photos and videos on iCloud.com.

- Go to photos.google.com or open Google Photos on another trusted device.
- Sign in to each Google Account that may have been used on the lost phone.
- Check Google Photos backup settings if you have another device signed in to the account. On Android, confirm that relevant device folders were included if you expected images from other apps or folders.
Google Photos stores pictures in the account’s library when backup is on. If the wrong account is open, backup was off, or an Android device folder was not included in backup, expected pictures may not appear. Google Photos Help: Back up photos & videos.

If photos are missing, check the less obvious locations
Search the library before assuming that an image was never backed up. Check Archive, Locked Folder, shared libraries or albums, and other photo services or devices that may have been syncing the pictures. In Google Photos, a date or timestamp difference can put an image somewhere unexpected in the timeline. Google’s missing-photo guidance covers additional checks.
If a picture was deleted from Google Photos, open Trash. Items still there can be restored; Google’s current guidance says they are permanently deleted after 30 days in Trash. Content permanently deleted from Trash cannot be restored through Google Photos. Google Photos Help: Restore recently deleted photos & videos.

Google Takeout can export current account data, but it cannot retrieve content that has already been permanently deleted. It is an export option for existing data, not a recovery method for missing originals. Google Account Help: Download your data.

The Apple guidance cited here confirms how to view iCloud Photos online, but does not establish a deletion-retention deadline. Do not assume an Apple recovery window based on Google Photos’ Trash rules.

Look for copies on other devices and in existing backups
Check a computer or tablet that was already syncing the same photo account, along with any local computer backup made before the phone went missing. A backup helps only if it predates the loss and includes the pictures you need. A generic phone backup does not necessarily contain photos that were being managed separately through a cloud photo service.
If the Android phone used an SD card, pictures may have been saved to it. That is useful only if the card itself is accessible; a cloud account cannot retrieve a lost card. Google notes that Find Hub’s factory reset may not erase SD cards, but that does not provide a way to recover a card or handset remotely. Android Help: Find, secure, or erase a lost Android device.

Secure the lost phone without erasing it prematurely
Photo recovery and device security are separate tasks. If the phone may be stolen, assess the privacy risk and secure the device and accounts. Avoid choosing remote erase while finding the phone is still a priority: erasure can remove data and reduce tracking options.
Android: use Find Hub
- Open Find Hub on the web or on a trusted Android device and sign in to the Google Account associated with the missing phone.
- Select the phone and review its location or last known location, if available.
- Use the available option to play a sound or mark the phone lost with contact information. Choose erase only if the security risk outweighs the remaining recovery and tracking options.
Remote actions depend on the phone being powered on, connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi, signed in to a Google Account, with Find Hub on and the device visible on Google Play. Android Help: Find, secure, or erase a lost Android device.

iPhone: use Find My or iCloud.com/find
Use Find My or iCloud.com/find to manage the missing iPhone. Apple says an erase request starts when an online device receives it; if the device is offline, the erase begins when it next comes online. Apple also warns that locating the device or playing a sound may no longer be possible after erasure in most cases. Apple Support: Erase a device in Find Devices on iCloud.com.
Protect account access and phone service
From a trusted device, review the signed-in devices for your Google Account, sign out the lost phone, and change the account password. Consider changing passwords for other accounts saved on the phone. A mobile carrier may be able to suspend service or issue a replacement SIM. If you must sign in from someone else’s device, use private browsing and sign out when finished. Google Account Help: Lock or erase your lost phone or computer.
What to expect from recovery tools
A “phone photo recovery” program cannot be relied on to pull files from a handset you do not possess. The documented routes are copies in photo-account libraries, existing backups, and items that remain recoverable in a service’s Trash. If you later recover a damaged or locked phone with inaccessible storage, that is a separate, model-specific repair and data-recovery problem; these cloud and account steps do not guarantee recovery from the device itself.
