Some early Retina MacBook Pro owners saw a faint afterimage remain briefly after a static window moved or the background changed. Reports in 2012 associated the problem more often with LG-manufactured panels; they did not establish that every Retina MacBook, or even every LG-equipped unit, was affected. A remnant that fades is image retention, not proof of permanent screen damage.
What image retention looked like on the Retina MacBook Pro
Apple introduced its first 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display on June 11, 2012. The model had a 15.4-inch, 2880 × 1800 IPS display at 220 pixels per inch; Apple described it as having more than five million pixels. Within days, owners reported faint remnants of static windows after those windows moved or the background changed.
AppleInsider reported that the afterimage was easiest to see against a light background and could take about five minutes to fade. Contemporary coverage often called the effect “ghosting,” but “image retention” or “persistence” more clearly describes a temporary afterimage.

Image retention is not necessarily permanent burn-in
Image retention is a faint image left temporarily on screen after the displayed content changes. In the reported cases, it faded over time. That is different from a permanent mark: a remnant that disappears is not, by itself, evidence of lasting burn-in. If a mark remains or is conspicuous, do not assume it will clear; document it and seek service advice.

Which Retina MacBook Pro models were implicated?
Reports in 2012 said the issue preferentially affected LG-manufactured displays, while Samsung-manufactured panels generally did not show it. MacRumors reported continued complaints in September 2012, including owners who said they were on their third or fourth machine. A later Ninth Circuit memorandum described LG panels as having image-retention, burn-in and color-accuracy problems, while Samsung panels did not exhibit those problems in the litigation record. That description reflects evidence in that case, not a measurement of how common the problem was among owners.
The launch model was the 15-inch Mid-2012 Retina MacBook Pro, model family A1398 / MacBookPro10,1. Apple’s specifications list a 15.4-inch, 2880 × 1800 display at 220 ppi. The Late-2012 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro also had an IPS Retina display, with 2560 × 1600 resolution at 227 ppi. The available reports do not establish that every screen size or production run had the same retention behavior or rate.

Apple’s guidance and prevention
MacRumors reproduced Apple support guidance explaining that an IPS screen may temporarily retain a faint image, such as a login window, after a new image replaces it, and that the remnant should disappear over time. The guidance recommends allowing the display to sleep when it is not in use and using a screen saver rather than leaving a static image on screen for long periods.
Contemporary reports also said Apple replaced machines showing significant symptoms. They do not establish a universal replacement policy, current repair eligibility or coverage for a particular owner.

How to check a used Retina MacBook for image retention
This is a practical check inferred from the reported symptom, not an Apple-certified diagnostic.
- Display a high-contrast static window for several minutes.
- Move the window or switch to a light or neutral background.
- Look for a faint outline or other remnant of the earlier image, and note whether and how quickly it fades.
- If the afterimage is obvious after a short exposure or does not fade, photograph it and ask a qualified service provider to assess the display before buying.
Do not treat a single check as proof that a screen will never show retention; the reports do not establish a reliable pass/fail threshold.

What to compare before buying or arranging a repair
- Exact model: Check the model identifier rather than relying only on “Retina MacBook Pro.” Panel behavior and display compatibility should not be generalized across sizes and production runs.
- Panel supplier: If it can be determined, note whether the unit has an LG or Samsung panel. The supplier association comes from historical reports and litigation materials, not a guarantee that a particular screen will or will not retain images.
- Observed symptom: Record how noticeable the remnant is and how long it takes to fade, alongside any photos.
- Service history and cost: Ask about prior display work and compare the total repair cost with the machine’s value. Current Apple coverage, consumer-law remedies and parts availability depend on the case and region and need to be checked directly.
A replacement display or assembly advertised for the MacBook Pro Retina A1398 is not automatically compatible with every A1398 configuration. Confirm the exact model and connector before ordering, and do not assume an aftermarket part is Apple-authorized. Ask the seller or repairer to verify fit and explain the part’s source and warranty.

How widespread was the problem?
The reports describe some affected owners, not all owners, and no reliable affected-owner percentage is established. The available evidence supports a historical association with some LG-manufactured displays; it does not provide a prevalence estimate or determine whether a particular used machine is affected.
