If your Lenovo laptop has no sound, start by checking mute and volume, the affected app’s volume, and the output device selected in Windows. Then check connections and test another output. If Windows cannot see an audio device, inspect Device Manager; install or reinstall a driver only from Lenovo’s support tools for your exact model and Windows version. The cause varies, so test after each step before moving on.
Check volume and app settings
- Check Windows volume: Select the speaker icon in the taskbar, make sure sound is not muted, and raise the volume.
- Check the affected app: Confirm its own volume is up and mute is off. If only one app is silent, open Windows’ Volume Mixer and check that app’s level and mute setting.

Choose the right sound output
In Windows, open Settings > System > Sound. Under Output, select the speakers, headphones, or other device you intend to use. Windows may be routing sound to a monitor, dock, wired headset, or Bluetooth device instead. If the intended playback device is available, select it; where appropriate, set it as the default playback device using Windows’ sound controls. Check connections and test another output
- For wired headphones or external speakers, check that the plug is fully seated in the correct port, cables are undamaged, and the accessory is powered on and not muted.
- If headphones are connected, unplug them and test the built-in speakers, if those are the output you want to use. Some speaker setups do not play through the speakers while headphones are plugged in.
- If available, try a known-working compatible headset or speaker. If that works while the built-in speakers do not, the result helps narrow the fault to the built-in speaker path; it does not by itself identify the failed component.
Microsoft provides additional checks for speaker and headphone sound problems.

Turn off audio enhancements and run the troubleshooter
Disable enhancements
Open Settings > System > Sound, select the output device, and turn Audio enhancements off if that option appears. Enhancements can interfere with playback on some systems; test sound again after changing the setting.
Run Windows audio troubleshooting
Run the audio troubleshooter through Get Help or the Troubleshoot controls available in your Windows version. The exact route can differ between Windows releases. Lenovo also includes a sound troubleshooter in its audio troubleshooting guidance. Apply any suggested fix, then test the affected output and app.

Fix a missing audio output device
If Sound settings says no output device is installed or the device is absent from the list, check whether Windows detects the audio hardware:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the audio device is listed but disabled, enable it.
- If it is not listed, use Device Manager’s option to show hidden devices, then choose Action > Scan for hardware changes.
A missing, disabled, outdated, or incorrectly loading driver can prevent Windows from detecting an output device. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for a missing or undetected audio output device before assuming the speakers need repair.

Update or reinstall the Lenovo audio driver
Use Lenovo Vantage or Lenovo Support to find the audio driver for your exact laptop model and Windows version. Do not install a driver intended for a different Lenovo model: driver packages and troubleshooting steps are not universal. Lenovo’s ThinkPad audio troubleshooting page is specifically for ThinkPad guidance, while Lenovo’s general audio instructions also describe driver troubleshooting.
- Identify your laptop’s exact model and confirm which Windows version it runs.
- Open Lenovo Vantage or the Lenovo Support page for that model and locate its audio driver.
- Follow Lenovo’s instructions to update or reinstall the matching driver.
- Restart the laptop and test the output device again.
If sound disappeared after a Windows update, note when it began and use the Windows and Lenovo guidance for your device. That timing is useful diagnostic context, but it does not prove the update is the cause.

Account for Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. If your Lenovo still runs Windows 10, that date matters when planning security updates and ongoing system support. For sound troubleshooting, continue to match any driver and instructions to the laptop model and Windows version you actually use.

If the correct output is selected, connections and app levels are sound, troubleshooting has not helped, and a model-matched driver is installed, the remaining cause may require device-specific diagnosis. Do not order an internal speaker assembly based only on these symptoms: the model and fault need to be established first. Lenovo’s ThinkPad instructions apply to ThinkPad devices, and Lenovo cautions that guidance may not fit every computer.
