If your Samsung emojis look different, first check whether the change is in Samsung Keyboard or only in a particular app. You can restore Samsung Keyboard’s default settings and make it the active keyboard, but Samsung does not document either step as a way to revert emoji artwork to an older design.
First, find where the emoji looks different
Open the emoji picker in Samsung Keyboard and compare an emoji there with the same one in the message or app where it looks unusual.
- The picker looks different: Check that Samsung Keyboard is active, then consider resetting its settings.
- Only one app looks different: The app may render emoji independently of Samsung Keyboard. Resetting the keyboard is not established as a fix for emoji already displayed in that app.
- Emoji look different across system surfaces: The reviewed Samsung guidance does not establish a setting that restores an earlier emoji design. Menu options and availability can vary by device and software version.
Make Samsung Keyboard the default
If another keyboard or input method is active, select Samsung Keyboard. On supported devices, go to Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard, then choose Samsung Keyboard. Menu labels can vary; if you cannot find the path, search Settings for “Samsung Keyboard.” This changes the active input method, not the emoji artwork itself. Reset Samsung Keyboard settings
- Open Settings and search for Samsung Keyboard.
- Scroll to Reset to default settings.
- Select Reset keyboard settings and confirm.
Samsung describes this as resetting keyboard settings to their defaults; its support page does not promise a rollback to older emoji artwork. Samsung says downloaded languages are not removed. The same settings area may offer separate controls to erase personalized predictions or clear the cache; those are not documented as emoji-design rollback options. Check emoji access and suggestions
If your issue is that emoji are hard to find rather than that their appearance changed, check Samsung Keyboard’s toolbar and suggestion settings. Samsung Keyboard includes an emoji control on its toolbar and settings for emoji and sticker suggestions. These affect access and suggestions; Samsung does not describe them as restoring a previous emoji design. See Samsung’s guide to keyboard settings.
Why emoji can look different in an app
An emoji’s appearance can depend on the software that renders it. Android Developers advises app developers to use the system emoji font so emoji in an app visually match those shown in the default keyboard and other system surfaces. That guidance explains why an app’s rendering may differ; it does not provide a user-facing setting to force every app to display emoji identically. If the difference is confined to one app, check that app’s own update and support options rather than assuming a keyboard reset will change its display. What Samsung’s emoji update information tells you
Samsung’s One UI 5.1.1 feature page records 88 new emojis and 10 new animations that can be created into emoji pairs. This is a historical feature description published by Samsung in 2024, not confirmation of which software version is on your device or a count of all emojis available on it.
