Resident Evil is a named franchise built around fear, mystery-solving and survival, but its games vary in viewpoint and how much they emphasize action. Anime-inspired survival horror is a broad visual and storytelling description, not a single genre formula: an anime-influenced game might be tense, action-heavy, intimate or dramatic depending on the title. To compare the styles, look at specific games and how they handle atmosphere, exploration, resource scarcity, combat and presentation.
What the two labels mean
Resident Evil has a clear reference point: Capcom’s long-running series. Capcom describes it as survival horror centered on fear, solving mysteries and surviving by any means necessary. Its 2025 Integrated Report says the series has evolved over three decades while retaining a connective throughline. As of March 31, 2025, Capcom reported more than 170 million units sold across the series (Capcom Integrated Report 2025).

By contrast, “anime-inspired survival horror” describes an influence rather than a particular series or fixed set of mechanics. Anime-influenced character design, animation or storytelling does not, on its own, tell you whether a game is frightening, combat-focused, emotionally dramatic or puzzle-heavy. Those traits need to be judged from the individual game.

It is misleading to treat Resident Evil as one camera style or one balance of horror and action. Capcom’s own overview points to entries with distinct settings and emphases: the original mansion escape, the zombie-infested city of Resident Evil 2, the pursuit-focused Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil 4’s move to over-the-shoulder third-person action, Resident Evil 6’s global bioterrorism stories, Resident Evil 7’s VR-compatible presentation and Village’s mix of horror and battle-driven action (Capcom Integrated Report 2025).
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
That variation matters when comparing it with another style. Resident Evil 7 is a useful example of close, personal horror: its producer, Masachika Kawata, said its first-person view aimed to make the experience more direct and visceral, and described a return to an intimate setting after recent entries had expanded to massive, global threats. Those are comments about Resident Evil 7, not a description of every game in the series (Capcom interview, June 24, 2016).
Compare the features that shape play
Atmosphere and fear
Consider what the specific game uses to create tension: dread, sudden shocks, being pursued, uncertainty about what is nearby, or another approach. Resident Evil’s stated identity includes fear and survival, but its entries differ in setting and action emphasis. Anime influence is not evidence of lighter horror or a particular emotional tone, so check the game itself rather than assuming its art style predicts how scary it will feel.
Rank #2
- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Viewpoint and player distance
A first-person camera presents the scene from the character’s eye level and can make threats feel immediate; an over-the-shoulder third-person camera keeps the playable character visible. Resident Evil has used more than one perspective, so a comparison based on Resident Evil 7 alone will not represent the whole series. Capcom discussed that first-person design specifically in its interview about Resident Evil 7 (Capcom interview, June 24, 2016).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesExploration and puzzles
Ask whether progress depends on inspecting rooms, finding clues, solving environmental puzzles or returning to earlier spaces. In a Capcom interview, Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi identified environmental exploration and puzzle-solving among the series’ key pillars, alongside fear and horror, resource management, and combat against enemies (Capcom interview, June 24, 2016). An anime-inspired game could share those systems, or use a very different structure; the label alone does not settle the question.
Rank #3
- TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
- RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Scarcity and combat
Look at what the player must conserve and how often the game expects them to fight. Nakanishi named resource management and combat as recurring pillars in the same interview. Capcom also characterized Resident Evil Village as having a higher degree of action gameplay elements than Resident Evil 7 while still calling it a new kind of survival horror (Capcom announcement, June 2020). This is a concrete example of action levels shifting within the franchise, not proof that all Resident Evil games share Village’s balance.
Visual and narrative presentation
Compare the particular game’s character designs, animation, setting and storytelling. Anime influence may be prominent in one title and subtle in another; it does not automatically mean exaggerated characters, a lighter mood or more combat. The useful question is how those choices work alongside that game’s horror systems.
Rank #4
- CLASSIC RESIDENT EVIL GAMEPLAY -- Overcome chilling encounters in a relentless fight for survival that ratchets up the intensity through nail-biting exploration and gripping puzzle-solving.
- EXPLORE RACCOON CITY FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- Get even closer to the action with an over-the-shoulder camera and updated control scheme, drawing you into every bloodcurdling encounter.
- SURVIVE TOGETHER IN THE MULTIPLAYER MODE -- Bring up to four friends into the carnage with Resident Evil Resistance, a multiplayer survival horror experience included in the Resident Evil 3 package. Available as a PlayStation 4 title compatible on all PlayStation 5 devices. Includes code necessary for redemption, requires additional download not on disc.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Which style should you try?
Choose by the experience you want, then check a named game’s actual features rather than relying on a broad style label.
- For a recognizable survival-horror framework: Resident Evil gives you a franchise Capcom describes through fear, mystery-solving and survival, with entries that vary in camera and action emphasis.
- For an anime-influenced presentation: identify the particular game first. Its art and narrative may appeal to you, but they do not establish whether it prioritizes puzzles, scarcity, pursuit or combat.
- For a direct comparison: evaluate both games on atmosphere, viewpoint, exploration and puzzles, resource use, combat frequency and visual storytelling. These features reveal more than the category names alone.
Capcom’s June 2020 announcement called Village a sequel to Resident Evil 7 and described its planned 2021 release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC. Those platform and timing details belong to the historical announcement; they are not a current check of availability or compatibility. The announcement is useful here for the series’ own description of Village’s more action-oriented direction (Capcom announcement, June 2020).
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.
