There is no official canon list of Resident Evil monsters that Leon Kennedy is unable to defeat by himself. The clearest example in the available official material is not even a monster: the 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake’s trailer highlights Leon’s knife duel with Krauser and a fight against two Gigantes, but it does not say either encounter requires an ally. So the fairest answer depends on what “couldn’t beat alone” means: an ally may physically intervene, provide tactical support, or simply be present while Leon fights.

Which Resident Evil monsters did Leon need help fighting?

For the encounters substantiated by the official sources cited here, there is not enough evidence to name a monster Leon canonically needed help to defeat. Capcom’s promotional description of the Resident Evil 4 remake shows challenging encounters, not a rule that Leon cannot win without assistance. Treating every companion scene or co-op-capable encounter as proof of necessity would overstate what the sources establish.

Two Gigantes in Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake)

Capcom’s description of the remake trailer says Leon prepares to tackle two Gigantes. That makes the scene a conspicuous example of Leon facing a threat with more than one enormous opponent, but the description does not establish that another character intervenes or that the story requires one. It supports calling the encounter daunting, not calling it an unavoidable team fight. Capcom’s trailer commentary on the PlayStation Blog is dated February 23, 2023.

Krauser in Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake)

Krauser is a human antagonist rather than a monster or B.O.W., so he is best treated as a related case, not included in a monster list. Capcom Promotion Producer Edvin Edsö calls the trailer scene “the iconic confrontation between Krauser and Leon” and describes Leon fending off Krauser’s knife attack while forced back on the floor. That depicts a dangerous duel, but does not show that Leon needs a partner to win.

What counts as “couldn’t beat alone”?

The phrase can refer to different kinds of help, and the distinction matters when comparing scenes across games and versions:

  • Direct intervention: another character fights the threat, rescues Leon, or otherwise changes the outcome of the encounter.
  • Tactical support: an ally creates an opening or helps Leon without taking over the fight.
  • Available support: a companion is nearby, a game allows co-op, or Leon has equipment or a scripted intervention. Those facts alone do not prove the story requires help.

A strict claim that Leon “couldn’t” win alone needs evidence of the first or second kind, or an explicit story requirement. A companion’s presence is not enough. The distinction also prevents a remake’s staging from being mistaken for the original game’s events.

Why the game version matters

Capcom’s chronology lists the original Resident Evil 2 (1998) and Resident Evil 4 (2005), as well as the Resident Evil 2 remake (2019) and Resident Evil 4 remake (2023). Those are separate releases, so an encounter or assist in one should not automatically be attributed to the other. Capcom also identifies Leon’s first arrival in Raccoon City in Resident Evil 2 and his storyline in Resident Evil 6, but that franchise overview does not establish a comprehensive list of monsters he needed help defeating. Capcom’s official chronology and sales page gives the release-year context.

Could Leon beat these Resident Evil bosses alone?

Based on the official material cited here, that question cannot be answered as a definitive yes or no for either encounter. The two Gigantes scene establishes that Leon faces two formidable opponents; the Krauser scene establishes a perilous confrontation with a skilled human opponent. Neither source says that Leon must have help, and neither establishes the outcome of a solo attempt. The accurate takeaway is that these are memorable, high-stakes encounters—not confirmed cases of monsters Leon cannot beat alone.

Capcom describes Resident Evil as survival horror built around fear, combat, exploration, and puzzle solving, a mix that helps explain why a dramatic or dangerous scene is not, by itself, proof of a required ally. Capcom reported more than 170 million Resident Evil units sold as of March 31, 2025; that is a franchise-wide sales figure, not a measure of any individual game’s popularity or difficulty. Capcom’s figures and series overview provide that context.
