Resident Evil (2026) is less a retelling of a specific game than a brisk survival-horror film built around the feeling of playing one. Zach Cregger’s 95-minute story follows medical courier Bryan as he carries biological cargo toward Raccoon City General Hospital while the t-Virus outbreak begins. GamesRadar calls it the best video game movie, but that is the reviewer’s judgment—not a settled consensus—and the film’s lean plot and departures from franchise lore are important qualifications.
Does Resident Evil feel like playing a video game?
In its strongest adaptation choice, the film turns familiar gameplay patterns into cinematic tension instead of recreating a game’s plot beat for beat. GamesRadar highlights over-the-shoulder framing, scavenging, weapon upgrades, cautious movement, and obstacles that make progress feel earned. Together, those choices give the audience a sense of seeing the danger from a player’s position.
That approach reflects director Zach Cregger’s stated interest in capturing the experience of playing Resident Evil. As David Sims reported in The Atlantic, Cregger felt “no film had quite yet captured the spirit of playing it.” The film’s game-like quality is therefore less about copying interface elements and more about building suspense around movement, limited resources, and the next threat.

What is the story, and how does it connect to the games?
Bryan is an ordinary medical courier caught up in the Raccoon City outbreak while transporting biological cargo toward the city’s general hospital. GamesRadar describes the film as taking place alongside the events of Resident Evil 2, but following a separate story rather than reenacting that game.
#1 Best Overall
- All six Resident Evil movies, now together in one collection! Based on the popular video game series and starring Milla Jovovich, these sci-fi thrillers are must-watch genre classics!
The distinction matters for fans looking for a faithful adaptation. The film borrows the setting and survival-horror grammar, but GamesRadar notes departures in virus and creature details as well as other aspects of established lore. Its priority is atmosphere and play-feel, not strict continuity with the games.
What works—and what may frustrate viewers?
Momentum, scares, and creatures
GamesRadar praises the film’s momentum, scares, creature effects, and immersive sense of danger. Its short runtime supports a brisk, survival-focused experience rather than a sprawling franchise story.
Rank #2
- Witness the beginning of Evil.Raccoon City, which was once a booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, is now a dying Midwestern town. The company?s exodus left the city a wasteland?with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, a group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night.
Lean characters and plot
The same review finds the plot and character development sparse. Viewers who want detailed backstories, extensive lore explanations, or a complex narrative may find the film thin. Its emphasis is on putting Bryan through a tense sequence of encounters, not building a large dramatic ensemble.

The Associated Press review points to humor as a significant part of the horror. Bryan’s lack of experience with real danger helps establish the film’s perspective; as AP reviewer Jocelyn Noveck quotes him, “I only use guns in video games.” The contrast gives the story a horror-comedy edge without requiring the audience to know the games.

Can you enjoy it without knowing Resident Evil?
Yes. The Associated Press says game knowledge is not required to follow the outbreak story. Newcomers can watch it as a survival-horror film about a courier trying to make it through a citywide crisis. Familiarity with the series can add context to its mechanics and Easter eggs, but the basic situation does not depend on recognizing them.
Who should watch it?
- Consider it if you enjoy brisk, gory survival horror, game-inspired camera work, and stories built around scavenging and uneasy movement.
- It may not suit you if you need close fidelity to game lore, substantial character development, or a detailed plot.
- For game fans, the appeal is seeing recognizable survival-horror patterns translated into film, alongside references and Easter eggs—not watching a faithful screen version of Resident Evil 2.
- For newcomers, Bryan’s outsider perspective and the self-contained outbreak premise provide a way in without franchise homework.
Verdict
Resident Evil (2026) makes a persuasive case that a video game adaptation can capture how a game feels without adapting its plot directly. Its camera perspective, resource gathering, weapon progression, and traversal challenges supply that player-like immersion. The trade-off is a deliberately lean story, limited character development, and lore changes. GamesRadar’s description of it as the best video game movie is a strong critical endorsement, not a universal ranking; the film’s clearest achievement is translating survival-horror play into cinematic momentum.
