Resend is a hosted email API platform: your application sends email through its REST API or an SDK rather than operating its own mail server. A basic integration needs an API key and a sender identity, then calls the send endpoint with a recipient, subject, and message body. Resend describes its service as an easy way to add email, but the available evidence does not establish that it is objectively the easiest provider.

How do I add email to my app with Resend?

The core flow is straightforward: create an API key, configure an allowed sender, install an SDK or call the REST API, and send a message from your application. The official feature page demonstrates a Node.js integration and also lists scheduling, batch sending, attachments, logs, webhooks, and idempotency keys. See Resend’s email API features.

  1. Create an API key. Store it as a server-side secret, such as an environment variable. Do not expose it in browser code or commit it to a public repository.
  2. Set up a sender identity. The sample uses onboarding@resend.dev. That example does not verify your own production domain; configure and verify the domain you intend to send from using Resend’s current domain setup instructions.
  3. Send from your application. Construct a Resend client with the API key, then call resend.emails.send with the sender, recipient, subject, and HTML body. The API page’s example recipient, delivered@resend.dev, is a test address, not a substitute for testing delivery to your real users.
  4. Handle failures and retries deliberately. Resend supports idempotency keys for requests that may be retried. Use one consistently for the same logical send operation; the feature does not make every retry safe automatically. Check the response and your application’s own error-handling rules.

Before putting the integration into production, test the actual sender domain, expected recipient flows, message rendering, and failure handling. Resend’s API page claims 99.9% uptime and states GDPR and SOC 2 compliance; those are vendor statements, not independent assessments of your specific requirements or the scope of the claims. The same page is the source for its feature descriptions: Resend email API features.

What can Resend do beyond sending a single message?

Transactional sending and delivery visibility

The API supports features including scheduled and batch sends, attachments, logs, webhooks, and idempotency keys. These can help with workflows such as password resets, receipts, and notifications, but you still need to design application behavior around errors, retries, and the status information your workflow requires. Feature availability is described on Resend’s feature page.

Receiving email

Resend also supports inbound email events. Its inbound workflow uses either a Resend-provided address or an address on a configured domain, plus a publicly accessible webhook that handles an email.received event. Attachments can be parsed through the API or an SDK. This is a separate capability from sending messages, so assess the receiving setup and webhook handling independently. Details are on Resend Inbound.

Usage and quota monitoring

Resend announced an Account Usage API on October 1, 2026. Its documented request is GET /usage; it requires a full-access API key and returns usage and limits. That can support quota dashboards, alerts, or throttling in your own application. See the Account Usage API changelog entry.

Which messages count toward the quota?

Resend’s pricing FAQ says broadcast messages sent through its broadcasts API or interface do not count against transactional email limits, which apply to sends through the /emails API. Inbound emails count toward the transactional quota. This distinction matters if your app both sends notifications and receives mail; verify how your intended workflow is classified in the current pricing FAQ.

What should I check before choosing Resend?

  • Volume and burst pattern: compare your expected monthly sends with the included allowance, and account for the Free plan’s stated 100-per-day cap.
  • Sender domains: consider how many verified domains your projects and environments need, and whether the plan’s domain allowance fits.
  • Message types: distinguish transactional sends, broadcasts, and inbound mail because the pricing FAQ describes different quota treatment.
  • Integration needs: verify that the available REST API or SDK fits your runtime, and decide whether you need inbound webhooks, attachments, logs, scheduling, or batch sending.
  • Operational limits: check current API rate-limit documentation before designing throughput or retry behavior. A May 24, 2023 changelog entry cited a default of 10 requests per second and advised queuing or reducing concurrency to avoid HTTP 429 responses; that historical figure is not a confirmed current limit. See the rate-limit changelog entry and confirm the live documentation.
  • Assurance requirements: evaluate vendor compliance and uptime statements against your organization’s requirements rather than treating the feature page’s claims as independent verification.

Resend offers a clear API-based route for applications that need to send email, with additional tools for receiving messages and monitoring usage. Whether it is the right fit depends on your quota, sender-domain, inbound-email, and operational needs—not on an independently established claim that it is the easiest option.
