Yes. The Netflix recruiter email described by Malwarebytes was a phishing operation, not a genuine hiring process. It steered marketing professionals to a counterfeit Netflix careers site that requested Facebook credentials through an unexpected “Career Profile” workflow.

How the fake Netflix hiring process worked

In a report published August 14, 2025, Malwarebytes researcher Pieter Arntz described scammers posing as Netflix recruiters. Their messages praised recipients’ marketing leadership and offered a seemingly suitable senior role. After the recipient replied, an interview invitation directed them to a Netflix-branded careers site.

  1. The unsolicited message presented a tailored marketing opportunity.
  2. A “Schedule Interview” link opened a counterfeit Netflix careers page listing marketing and social-media jobs.
  3. The page asked visitors to create or access a “Career Profile.”
  4. Whether visitors selected Facebook or an email-based option, the next screen demanded Facebook credentials while remaining on the fake Netflix domain.

The copied branding made the page look plausible, but Malwarebytes said the domain contained a misspelling. A familiar logo, job description or recruiter name does not prove that a site is operated by Netflix.

What happened when credentials were entered

Malwarebytes observed a websocket-based flow that could try submitted usernames and passwords against Facebook as they were entered. That could let the attackers quickly determine whether credentials worked and potentially trigger a follow-up multi-factor-authentication prompt. The researchers did not submit valid credentials, so their report does not document a confirmed account takeover.

The report also does not establish how many people were affected, how much money was lost, or whether the reported phishing domains are still active. No independent statement from Netflix or Meta confirming this specific campaign was identified in the material available for this report.

Why marketing and social-media staff are attractive targets

A marketer’s Facebook access may control more than a personal profile. Depending on the account’s permissions, an attacker could reach business Pages, advertising accounts or other brand assets.

How to verify a recruiter and job listing safely

Use an independent route to the employer

Do not treat the recruiter’s link as the source of truth. Open a new browser tab, type the company’s address yourself or use a trusted bookmark, and navigate to its official careers section. Search for the role there and contact the company through contact details published on that independently reached site.

Inspect the complete domain

Read the entire address in the browser bar, including the spelling immediately before the top-level domain. Attackers can copy page layouts, logos and text while registering a look-alike domain. A misspelling or unexpected domain is a reason to stop.

Reject unexpected social sign-ins

A legitimate interview invitation should not require Facebook, Google or another unrelated consumer-account login on an unfamiliar hiring page. Close the tab rather than testing the form with a real password.

Verification route Risk and next step
Recruiter-supplied careers link The sender controls the destination and can present a convincing imitation. Treat it as untrusted until independently verified.
Employer site reached independently Compare the role and recruiter details there, then use the company’s published contact channel if anything differs.

What to do if you entered a password

  1. Change the Facebook password immediately. Use a new, unique password rather than one used on another service.
  2. Enable multi-factor authentication and review active sessions, recovery details and connected apps for changes you did not make.
  3. Protect reused accounts. Change the same password anywhere else it was used, beginning with email and administrator accounts.
  4. Tell your workplace IT or security team if the account can access a business Page, ad account, payment method or company systems.
  5. Preserve evidence. Keep the email, destination address and screenshots, but do not revisit the page or submit more information.

If an attacker has already changed account details, use Facebook’s official account-recovery process from a device you trust and alert the owners of any affected business assets.

What employers can do

  • Tell staff that hiring teams will never require authentication through an unfamiliar page.
  • Use least-privilege roles for Pages and advertising accounts, with separate business identities where possible.
  • Require multi-factor authentication and monitor administrator, payment and campaign changes.
  • Give employees a simple channel for reporting suspicious recruiting messages without penalty.
  • Review access promptly when an employee reports entering credentials into a phishing page.

Related recruiter scams

A separate Malwarebytes report from July 2026 described multi-brand recruiter scams using fake Google sign-in prompts. It supports the broader warning that criminals can combine job lures with counterfeit social-login pages; it does not prove that the Facebook-focused Netflix domains from the 2025 report remain operational.
