In October 2016, Viral Security Group researchers reported that a chain of vulnerabilities could defeat some Samsung Knox protections on unpatched devices by abusing Samsung’s Real-time Kernel Protection (RKP). The report described a historical, model- and firmware-dependent vulnerability—not a universal or current bypass of every Knox device.

What the 2016 report claimed

SecurityWeek reported on October 4, 2016, that researchers had used weaknesses involving RKP to bypass parts of Samsung Knox on devices that had not received the relevant fixes. The disclosure concerned privilege escalation: code running with limited rights could potentially gain higher privileges and interfere with protections intended to defend the Android kernel.

Viral Security Group later described its KNOXout disclosure as CVE-2016-6584, a group of three privilege-escalation vulnerabilities. That characterization comes from the researchers’ own disclosure and should not be read as evidence that all Samsung models shared the same exposure.

Why RKP mattered to Knox

Samsung’s February 16, 2016 explanation said RKP places a security monitor in an isolated execution environment. Samsung’s rationale was that a protection mechanism implemented entirely inside the Android kernel could itself be bypassed after the kernel had been compromised.

In Samsung’s description, RKP was intended to monitor kernel activity and protect against:

  • Unauthorized execution of privileged code.
  • Direct access by user processes to kernel data.
  • Manipulation of selected critical kernel structures.

Samsung explicitly said the latter two capabilities were available only on select models. These are the vendor’s stated design goals, not an independent confirmation that every implementation provided every listed protection.

The Android kernel flaw connected to the attack chain

Contemporary coverage connected the chain to CVE-2015-1805, a local elevation-of-privilege vulnerability in the Android kernel. In a March 18, 2016 advisory, Google said it had learned of a rooting application using the unpatched flaw on some Android devices.

The attack required the user to install the application first. Google said it was blocking known rooting applications and that Android partners had received a patch on March 16, 2016. That context matters: the vulnerability was local, and exploitation depended on an unpatched device and the installation or execution of malicious software.

Was the Knox issue patched?

There is no single yes-or-no answer for every Samsung phone. The May 2016 Android bulletin identifies affected Nexus devices and their remediation; it does not establish when each Samsung model, carrier variant or region received a corresponding fix. Samsung also warns that security-release availability and deployment timing can differ by device.

For a meaningful exposure check, record the exact model number, firmware or build number, Android security patch level, carrier or regional variant, and whether the device still receives security updates. Compare those details with Samsung’s security-update information and the manufacturer or carrier release notes. A phone that is current for its supported patch channel cannot be assessed from the 2016 headline alone, while an unsupported phone may remain exposed to old vulnerabilities even if it resembles a patched model.

How to check a device today

  1. Open the phone’s Settings app and locate the device-information or software-information screen. Labels vary by One UI and Android version.
  2. Write down the exact model identifier and software build or firmware number.
  3. Open the security-update screen and record the Android security patch level and the date shown.
  4. Check Samsung’s security-update documentation for that model or product family, then check the carrier or regional release information when applicable.
  5. If the phone no longer receives security maintenance, treat the 2016 RKP report as historical evidence of why unsupported firmware is risky—not as a way to prove a specific exploit still works.

What the report does—and does not—prove

  • It documents a security-research disclosure from 2016 involving RKP, Knox and unpatched software.
  • It does not show that every Samsung Knox device was vulnerable.
  • It does not provide a current exposure result for a particular model or firmware build.
  • It does not establish a complete Samsung patch timeline from the Nexus-focused Android bulletin.
  • It does not validate or reproduce operational exploit instructions for present-day devices.
