Yes. A vehicle’s navigation can be spoofed without displaying an obviously impossible position or turn. The likely study behind this topic is the USENIX Security 2018 paper “All Your GPS Are Belong To Us: Towards Stealthy Manipulation of Road Navigation Systems.” Its attack makes small, controlled changes to the location reported to a navigation system, causing the suggested route to follow real roads and physically possible turns while leading toward a wrong destination.

What the researchers demonstrated

GPS spoofing feeds a receiver counterfeit positioning information. Unlike jamming, which blocks or disrupts legitimate signals, spoofing attempts to make the receiver accept a false position or movement.

The USENIX researchers’ central idea was to “slightly shift the GPS location so that the fake navigation route matches the shape of the actual roads and trigger physically possible instructions.” Because the altered route still resembles normal driving, a driver may see no dramatic jump across buildings, impossible U-turn, or obvious off-road segment.

The objective was covert misdirection: guide a driver toward an unintended destination without the driver realizing that navigation data had been manipulated.

Can GPS spoofing send a driver to the wrong place?

In the study’s evaluations, yes. The researchers used several forms of testing rather than relying on a single map simulation:

  • Controlled measurements with a portable GPS spoofer and real cars.
  • Trace-driven simulation using 600 taxi traces from Manhattan and Boston.
  • A real-world drive in the researchers’ own car.
  • Driving-simulator studies with participants in the United States and China.

In those simulator studies, 95% of participants followed navigation to the wrong destination without recognizing the attack. That percentage describes the study’s simulator participants and conditions; it is not a prevalence estimate for drivers generally and does not prove that 95% of real-world motorists would be fooled.

Why the route may look normal

Small location changes

A conventional “wrong dot on the map” attack would be easy to notice if the vehicle appeared to leap across a river or building. The demonstrated approach instead adjusts reported positions incrementally.

Road-shaped false guidance

The attacker chooses shifts that keep the resulting route aligned with the road network. Navigation can therefore announce ordinary lane changes, turns, and road segments even though the overall destination has been altered.

Human expectations work against detection

Drivers commonly trust a familiar navigation interface and concentrate on traffic. If each individual instruction is plausible, the accumulating deviation may not trigger suspicion before the vehicle is far from its intended destination.

What a driver can—and cannot—reliably check

There is no source-supported consumer self-test that can reliably confirm GPS spoofing in an ordinary car. A driver can treat unexpected behavior as a safety signal, but not as proof of an attack.

  • Compare the map position with visible landmarks, road signs, and the vehicle’s actual direction of travel.
  • Be cautious when the route repeatedly conflicts with signs, known road geometry, or the intended trip.
  • Pull over safely and verify the destination using an independent device or known route rather than continuing to follow contradictory instructions.
  • Remember that poor reception, map errors, multipath reflections, sensor faults, or a stale destination can also explain unusual guidance.

These checks may reveal an error, but they do not distinguish spoofing from every other navigation failure.

How researchers detect spoofing in vehicles

The main defensive concept is redundancy: estimate where the vehicle should be using signals that do not depend solely on GPS, then compare that estimate with the GPS position.

Vehicle-local fallback localization

The CARAMEL research architecture models movement from vehicle sensors and compares the independently estimated location with GPS. In one reported simulation setup it detected 97% of maliciously modified GPS measurements, reaching up to 98% in selected configurations. Those are system-specific simulation results, not a guarantee for current consumer vehicles.

The design uses thresholds and sliding windows. A shorter window can react faster but may produce more false alarms from normal sensor noise; a longer window can improve confidence while delaying detection.

Collaborative and infrastructure-assisted checks

A second approach shares information with trusted infrastructure or other connected-vehicle components. Agreement among vehicles, roadside systems, and onboard estimates can expose a GPS reading that does not fit the wider traffic picture. This requires dependable communications, trust management, and procedures for revoking compromised certificates; it is a research architecture, not proof that ordinary cars already provide this protection.

Newer sensor-fusion designs

A 2025/2026 vehicle-localization paper describes adaptive combinations of GPS, dead reckoning, inertial measurements, and received signal strength. Its three operating modes combine GPS with dead reckoning, dead reckoning with received-signal-strength data, or dead reckoning alone. The paper reports simulation and field experiments, but the available summary does not provide enough detail to quote a single quantitative field-performance figure.

How defensive approaches compare

Approach Independent information required Detection style Evidence and trade-offs
Vehicle-local sensor comparison Inertial, wheel, or other vehicle-motion sensors Onboard discrepancy check Can operate without infrastructure; thresholds and window length balance reaction speed against false alarms. CARAMEL’s percentages come from simulation.
Collaborative or infrastructure-assisted checking Vehicle data plus trusted roadside or network data Cross-system consistency check Can add context unavailable to one car, but depends on connectivity, trust, and certificate management.
Adaptive multi-sensor localization GPS, dead reckoning, inertial measurements, and/or received signal strength Switching or fusing operating modes A newer study reports simulation and field testing; detailed field accuracy is not stated in the available summary.

What the other detection studies actually show

A separate IEEE Access simulator study reported machine-learning accuracy from 96% in its worst case to 99% in its best case, while deep-learning accuracy ranged from 82% to 99%. These figures depend on the study’s scenarios and datasets; they should not be presented as field detection rates for vehicles.

Across the defensive literature, the important questions are which signals are independent, whether detection is local or collaborative, how quickly a discrepancy is flagged, how uncertainty and false alarms are handled, and whether results come from simulation or road testing.

What this means for vehicle owners and fleets

A GPS receiver, navigation unit, or generic navigation app is part of the exposed system, not a demonstrated remedy. The cited work does not establish a validated consumer retrofit, plug-in detector, or specific retail product that defeats this attack.

For fleet operators and connected-vehicle programs, the practical direction is to assess GPS integrity as part of a broader cybersecurity and localization design: combine independent motion estimates, define safe behavior when sensors disagree, log anomalies, and protect communications and credentials. Any commercial monitoring or assessment service should be evaluated for its actual sensor inputs, detection latency, false-alarm handling, and independent field evidence.

Bottom line

The USENIX Security 2018 work shows why plausible navigation is more dangerous than an obviously broken map: carefully shifted GPS data can produce legal-looking roads and believable turns while steering toward the wrong destination. Research defenses based on sensor comparison and collaboration are promising, but their published accuracy figures are tied to particular simulations or experiments—not a blanket claim about every vehicle on the road today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GPS spoofing the same as GPS jamming?

No. Spoofing supplies counterfeit positions or signals that a receiver may accept; jamming mainly blocks or disrupts legitimate GPS reception.

Does every unusual navigation instruction mean a car is being spoofed?

No. Map errors, weak reception, multipath effects, sensor faults, and incorrect destinations can cause similar symptoms. The cited research does not provide a reliable driver-operated test that identifies spoofing by itself.
