Security researchers demonstrated a laboratory proof of concept for obtaining deck-order information from a ShuffleMaster Deck Mate 2 casino shuffler. Their work shows a potential security risk—not a confirmed attack on a casino floor, and not evidence that a shuffler was used to cheat in the Hustler Casino Live controversy that prompted the research.
What the researchers demonstrated
IOActive examined two automated shufflers, the ShuffleMaster Deck Mate 1 and Deck Mate 2. These casino machines assist dealers with shuffling and can check decks. In its August 2023 summary, IOActive said it reverse engineered the original firmware state machines of both models and found no evidence of hidden manufacturer functions designed to cheat players or increase the house edge. The researchers nevertheless described ways an attacker with access to compromised equipment could learn deck order or manipulate card order. Feasibility depends on the machine’s capabilities and the attacker’s access.
The Deck Mate 2 proof of concept used its internal camera, which is involved in deck checks, to obtain information about the deck. WIRED reported that the researchers demonstrated transmitting deck-order information over Bluetooth to a nearby phone, using a Raspberry Pi. IOActive researcher Joseph Tartaro described the potential significance this way: “Basically, it allows us to do more or less whatever we want … We can, for example, just read the constant data from the camera so we can know the deck order, and when that deck goes out into play, we know exactly the hand that everyone is going to have.” This describes the researchers’ claimed capability in their demonstration, not a confirmed real-world incident.

The two models should not be treated as having the same attack route. WIRED reported that the Deck Mate 1 lacked the Deck Mate 2’s external USB port and internal camera. For the Deck Mate 1 route they examined, researchers said access to the machine’s case and a chip that stores code were required. That is a distinct, more physically invasive scenario; it is not the camera-based Deck Mate 2 demonstration.

Does this mean casino games were hacked?
No. WIRED reported that the researchers had not attempted the attack in an operating casino. Light & Wonder, the shufflers’ maker, told WIRED: “Neither the DeckMate 2 nor any other L&W automatic card shuffler has ever been compromised on a casino floor.” The company also said IOActive’s testing was conducted in laboratory conditions that could not be replicated in a regulated and monitored casino environment. These are the company’s claims, not independent proof that compromise is impossible; equally, the laboratory demonstration is not proof that a casino-floor attack occurred.
The work was prompted by the September 2022 Hustler Casino Live hand controversy and its postmortem, which reported no credible evidence of foul play. The shuffler research does not establish that a Deck Mate machine was involved in that game or that the controversy resulted from a hacked shuffler.

What the findings do—and do not—say about security
IOActive’s report distinguishes between hidden manufacturer functionality and attacks on equipment an adversary has compromised or gained access to. It reported no evidence that the examined devices contained secret manufacturer code intended to cheat players. A possible attack involving compromised equipment is not evidence of manufacturer-directed cheating.

WIRED reported that IOActive said the company acknowledged some issues and planned fixes, while Light & Wonder disputed the applicability of the laboratory conditions to regulated casinos. The available reporting does not establish whether fixes were ultimately deployed, which operators adopted mitigations, or the current security status of any specific machine. It would therefore be premature to describe the issue as either universally fixed or actively exploitable in casinos.

One mitigation discussed in WIRED was limiting an entry point. Mark Pace, vice president of the International Gaming Standards Association, said: “The short-term fix might just be eliminating the entry point,” referring to the security discussion. This is a proposed approach, not confirmation of a change implemented across the installed fleet.
