Researchers at the University of St Andrews developed SWiM (Shape Writing in Motion), a prototype that lets you enter words by tilting a device instead of tracing letters with a finger. The project explored one-handed typing on large touchscreens; its published evaluation reported 15 words per minute after minimal practice for novice users, while one participant reached 32 words per minute after about 90 minutes.
What is SWiM?
SWiM stands for Shape Writing in Motion. It is a research prototype for gesture-based text entry: you tap to start a word, then tilt the device so a virtual ball follows a path across an onscreen keyboard. The letters along that path form the intended word.
Unlike a conventional swipe keyboard, SWiM uses movement of the device to make the gesture rather than a finger sliding over the screen. The idea is to make one-handed entry more practical when a touchscreen is large or the other hand is occupied.
How does tilt typing work?
The interaction draws on simple movements such as pitching the device up or down and rolling it left or right. A user combines these movements to guide the virtual ball along a word-shaped path. The system then interprets the path as text.
#1 Best Overall
- Improved Typing Posture: Type more naturally with a curved, split keyframe and reduce muscle strain on your wrists and forearms thanks to the sloping keyboard design
- Pillowed Wrist Rest: Curved wrist rest with memory foam layer offers typing comfort with 54 per cent more wrist support; 25 per cent less wrist bending compared to standard keyboard without palm rest
- Perfect Stroke Keys: Scooped keys match the shape of your fingertips so you can type with confidence on a wireless keyboard crafted for comfort, precision and fluidity
- Adjustable Palm Lift: Whether seated or standing, keep your wrists in total comfort and a natural typing posture with ergonomically-designed tilt legs of 0, -4 and -7 degrees
- Ergonomist Approved: The ERGO K860 wireless ergonomic keyboard is certified by United States Ergonomics to improve posture and lower muscle strain
The University of St Andrews described the technique as a way to use a device’s motion sensors for gesture typing, reducing the need to reach accurately across small onscreen keys. It was designed with large devices in mind, though demonstrations also used phone- and watch-sized screens.
How fast was SWiM?
The figures reported in 2017 are results from a small research evaluation, not a general promise of typing speed.

| Reported result | Context |
|---|---|
| 15 words per minute | Novice users reached this rate after minimal practice, according to the University of St Andrews repository abstract. |
| 32 words per minute | One participant in a pilot longitudinal study reached this rate after approximately 90 minutes of practice, according to the same abstract. |
New Atlas also reported the result as up to 32 words per minute after 90 minutes, but that is a journalistic summary of the single-participant finding. It should not be taken as a typical speed or a direct comparison with other input methods.
Could tilt typing help when one hand is busy?
That is the use case SWiM was designed to explore. Tilting a device could be useful when a person is holding an object or finds it awkward to reach across a large screen with one thumb. The St Andrews authors characterized the technique as suitable for occasional use and as a possible alternative to one-handed typing in some situations.

However, the available results do not establish that tilt typing is better than swipe keyboards, voice input, or physical keyboards. They do not provide comparable error rates, visual-attention measurements, or walking-and-carrying performance. The prototype’s evaluation also does not establish how well it works for typical users beyond the reported practice conditions.

Current consumer availability is unverified. The academic record describes a research prototype and a 2017 evaluation; it does not establish a currently maintained app, supported iPhone or Android versions, or a current app-store listing. A 2017 New Atlas article said an app was “on the way,” but that statement does not confirm that the app was released or remains available.
