Yes, PS5 consoles use liquid metal to cool the main processor, but the available evidence does not establish that ordinary vertical placement makes it leak or causes overheating. Sony’s design story supports both vertical and horizontal placement. If your console shows overheating symptoms, first follow Sony’s airflow and dust guidance; persistent problems should go to PlayStation Support, not a do-it-yourself internal repair.
Can you leave a PS5 standing vertically?
Sony’s PS5 design story describes the console stand as supporting both vertical and horizontal placement. That indicates both orientations are intended uses. It does not guarantee that every individual console is fault-free, but the reviewed sources do not show that standing a PS5 vertically, by itself, causes liquid metal to leak or the console to overheat.
The claim that vertical placement causes liquid-metal leakage remains an allegation in reports, not an established general defect. The sources document the cooling material and Sony’s design choices, but do not establish a causal link between normal vertical use and leakage or quantify how often such failures occur. No reliable population statistic is available here for the number or share of consoles affected.

Sony confirms that PS5 consoles use liquid metal as the thermal interface material (TIM) for the main processor. In its 2024 PS5 Pro teardown, Shinya Tsuchida, PS5 Pro Mechanical Design Lead, says Sony researched insulation for the original PS5 and that the basic structure continues in the Pro. Sony says the Pro adds fine grooves where liquid metal is applied to make cooling more stable.

That detail is specific to the PS5 Pro. Sony presents the grooves as part of the Pro’s cooling design, not as proof that earlier consoles have a vertical-placement defect or as a confirmed fix for one. iFixit’s original PS5 teardown also observed liquid metal on the processor and notes that it is electrically conductive. A teardown of a console is a physical inspection, not a study measuring failures across PS5 owners.
What to do if your PS5 is overheating
A hot or noisy console does not, on its own, identify liquid-metal migration as the cause. Dust, restricted ventilation, and other faults can also affect cooling; the available sources do not diagnose an individual console’s condition. Sony says a louder fan during some games can be normal because it temporarily runs faster to cool the system.

- Check airflow. Keep the side and rear vents unobstructed, leave at least 10 cm of free space around each side, and avoid placing the console in a cramped space or on long-fibre carpet.
- Clear dust around the vents. Sony’s overheating and noise guidance says to disconnect the AC power cable before using a low-powered vacuum around the vents.
- Contact PlayStation Support if the problem continues. If Sony’s prevention steps do not resolve the issue, use PlayStation Support for next steps.
Do not open the console to inspect or reapply liquid metal. Sony warns against home teardown because of fire, electric-shock, and injury risks, and says disassembly invalidates the manufacturer guarantee. A stand changes how the console is positioned; it is not an internal cooling repair.

Stand availability and internal cooling are separate matters: an optional vertical stand enables placement, but it does not repair a thermal problem.
