Reports say a Russian Mi-8 helicopter came down in Voronezh Oblast on October 1, 2026, killing three crew members. The cause has not been officially confirmed: accounts allege friendly fire, but the incident details had not been independently verified, and the £11 million value in the headline is not supported by an authoritative valuation source.
What is reported about the helicopter loss?
The Kyiv Independent reported on October 2 that an Mi-8 was lost in Voronezh Oblast, about 80 kilometres from the city of Voronezh. It attributed details to Russian channels and explicitly said the reporting had not been independently verified. Russian authorities had not publicly confirmed that the helicopter was shot down. The Kyiv Independent
The reported toll is three crew members: a pilot, navigator, and onboard gunner. Those roles and the fatalities are reported claims, not independently established findings.
Was the Mi-8 brought down by friendly fire?
Friendly fire is alleged, but the accounts differ and no cause is confirmed in the reviewed reporting. Some early reports described Russian air defence as responsible. Later claims attributed to Russian pro-war Telegram channels identified a Russian Su-35 crew, which allegedly mistook the helicopter for a Ukrainian drone. The Insider reported those claims on October 2; they should not be read as official confirmation. The Insider

The Mi-8 is a Soviet-designed, twin-engine helicopter used for transport, combat support, and humanitarian missions. That general description does not identify the variant or configuration of the helicopter involved in this reported loss.

Is the helicopter really worth £11 million?
Brit Brief reported an £11 million valuation on October 2, 2026, but the reviewed report provides no valuation method, aircraft variant, condition, or authoritative basis for the figure. It should therefore be treated as an unverified headline estimate, not a confirmed aircraft value. Brit Brief
