A report says U.S. forces are using laser weapon systems in the Strait of Hormuz and controlling them with modified Xbox-style controllers. The sources available do not independently confirm that deployment, identify the laser system, or establish that the controllers are retail Xbox hardware. Official Navy and Army accounts document similar interface ideas in separate programs, but those precedents do not verify the current claim.
What the report claims—and what is confirmed
An October 2, 2026 report republished by egov.mn and attributed to Interesting Engineering says U.S. forces are using laser systems against aerial threats in the Strait of Hormuz. It describes operators using modified Xbox-style controllers. Read the report.
The official materials located do not confirm that specific deployment. They also do not name the system or contractor involved. The Hormuz deployment and controller details should therefore be treated as reported claims, not established military facts.

Navy LaWS aboard USS Ponce, 2014
In December 2014, the Office of Naval Research described its Laser Weapon System (LaWS) operating aboard USS Ponce in the Persian Gulf. The Navy characterized its control interface as video-game-like. This was a historical Navy deployment, not evidence that LaWS is being used in the Strait of Hormuz now. The Navy’s account of the deployment and ONR’s December 2014 release describe that earlier event.

Then-Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Matthew Klunder said, “The Laser Weapon System is the right tool for the right situation.” The statement concerned LaWS generally; it was not a comment on the reported Hormuz activity.
Army DE M-SHORAD training
In a separate Army account about the DE M-SHORAD Combat Shoot-Off, Soldiers suggested commercial gaming controllers as a possible improvement over the standard controller during training. The account documents a suggestion in that test-event context; it does not say those controllers were deployed to Hormuz. Read the Army account.

Army E-HEL production
The Army has also announced that its E-HEL program moved from prototype development to production and named AeroVironment as the contractor. That is separate program context: the announcement does not connect E-HEL to the Hormuz report. Read the Army announcement.
Which laser system and controller are involved?
The available sources do not establish whether the reported Hormuz system is LaWS, DE M-SHORAD, E-HEL, or another system. They likewise do not identify the controller’s maker, model, modifications, or compatibility. “Xbox-style” describes the report’s comparison; it is not proof that a standard retail Xbox controller can operate a military laser.

These examples should not be conflated: they involve different services, systems, dates, and settings. The Navy’s 2014 LaWS account and the Army’s training account show that game-like or commercial gaming controls have been discussed or used in other contexts, but neither independently corroborates the specific Hormuz claim.
