TechRadar reported on October 2, 2026, that Meta claimed research tax credits tied to AI data centers it characterized as experimental or “pilot models.” The report puts the resulting tax savings at about $2 billion for 2024 and $3.9 billion for 2025—nearly $6 billion combined. Those figures and the characterization are reported claims, not details independently confirmed in the Meta SEC filings cited here.
What the report says Meta claimed
According to TechRadar’s October 2, 2026 report, Meta treated AI data centers and related equipment, including AI chips used to outfit the facilities, as experimental or “pilot models” when claiming research tax credits. The report attributes about $2 billion in tax savings to 2024 and $3.9 billion to 2025, nearly $6 billion in total.
The terms “experimental” and “pilot models” describe the report’s account of Meta’s position; the available material does not establish that either phrase is a verified quotation from a named Meta representative. Nor does it identify the precise facilities, purchases, tax years covered by the underlying claims, or documentation Meta submitted.

The cited SEC filings do not independently confirm that Meta designated AI data centers as experimental for research-credit purposes or verify the reported savings. Meta’s filings discuss tax positions and report depreciation for servers and network assets, but that broader financial context does not establish the specific strategy described by TechRadar. The absence of confirmation in those filings does not show that the report is false.

The available sources also do not establish whether the IRS has approved or rejected this particular research-credit position. The reported claim should not be presented as a public IRS ruling, a final tax determination, or a court decision.
A separate IRS tax notice concerns earlier years
Meta’s June 30, 2026 Form 10-Q describes a September 2025 statutory notice asserting $15.89 billion in additional tax, plus interest and penalties, for tax years 2017–2019. Meta says the notice primarily concerns transfer pricing with foreign subsidiaries and other international tax adjustments. The company also says the proposed adjustments are not a final determination.
That notice is a separately described matter, not confirmation of or a ruling on the AI data-center research-credit claims reported by TechRadar. The amounts and years should not be conflated: the reported research-credit savings concern 2024 and 2025, while the notice concerns asserted additional tax for 2017–2019.
How to read the nearly $6 billion figure
- About $2 billion for 2024: tax savings attributed to Meta’s research-credit claims by TechRadar, not independently verified in the cited SEC filings.
- $3.9 billion for 2025: likewise reported by TechRadar, rather than confirmed by those filings.
- Nearly $6 billion combined: the report’s total for the two years, not an established final IRS or court determination.
Because the sources available here do not set out the underlying IRS materials or a specific agency position on these credits, they do not resolve the legal application of the claim.
