Yes. Epic Games alleged in a federal complaint filed February 27, 2025, that Isaac Strock stole access to other players’ accounts and sold access to hundreds of them. The complaint describes a real account-resale scheme, but its claims are allegations—not a court finding—and it does not establish that thousands of accounts were sold worldwide.
What Epic’s complaint says happened
Epic’s complaint says the company had more than 500 million registered players and alleges that Strock made thousands of dollars in profits by selling access to hundreds of Epic Games accounts. It describes listings on Telegram that included prices, V-Bucks balances, and screenshots of rare cosmetics. The filing is a civil complaint, so the alleged conduct and figures should not be treated as adjudicated facts.

The complaint’s scale is narrower than the headline phrase “thousands of accounts” might suggest: it supports an allegation involving hundreds handled by one seller, not a verified global count of accounts bought or sold.

An Epic account may contain personal information, gameplay statistics, V-Bucks, and cosmetic items. Rare or event-limited cosmetics can make an account more attractive to buyers, especially because Epic says cosmetics cannot be transferred between accounts. That combination of account history and digital inventory helps explain why access may be offered for sale.

- Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
- If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
- Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
- Redemption: Online
Epic says buying and selling Epic Games accounts is prohibited and that there is no legitimate account market. A listing that advertises rare items or a large V-Bucks balance is therefore not an authorized way to acquire those items.
How account access is allegedly obtained
Reused passwords
Epic’s complaint alleges that account sellers obtained username-and-password combinations from other data breaches. A password reused on an Epic account can put it at risk when credentials exposed elsewhere are tried against the account.

Impersonation of the account holder
The complaint also alleges that the seller impersonated players to deceive Epic support. It describes the use of account-related details—including linked-platform information, IP addresses, email information, and geolocation—to make fraudulent requests appear credible.

The wider stolen-credential market
A U.S. Department of Justice announcement on October 29, 2024, described a broader supply chain involving RedLine and META infostealers. DOJ said the malware targeted millions of victim computers and stole information such as usernames, passwords, financial details, browser cookies, and cryptocurrency-account data. It said stolen data, called “logs,” was sold on cybercrime forums and used for further fraud and hacks.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
DOJ also warned that stolen authentication cookies can help criminals bypass multifactor authentication. That establishes a general risk in the cybercrime ecosystem; it does not show that RedLine or META supplied the credentials used in Epic’s complaint.
What stolen Fortnite accounts were reportedly worth
| Evidence | Reported amount | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Epic Games’ February 2025 complaint | Hundreds to more than $1,000 for valuable accounts; one documented sale was approximately $425 in Bitcoin | The complaint alleges these prices appeared in the described scheme. The approximately $425 transaction was dated September 13, 2024; it is one documented sale, not a typical or current market price. |
| Night Lion Security’s historical case study, describing activity around 2020–2021 | Tens of thousands of dollars per month for high-profile vendors | This is historical security-research reporting about vendor sales, not a current estimate of the market or the earnings of the person named in Epic’s complaint. |
These figures describe different things: an alleged price for an individual account, one transaction, and a historical estimate of vendor revenue. They should not be combined into a present-day market total.

Is buying an account legal or safe?
Epic prohibits account sales, so a buyer does not receive an authorized transfer of the account or its cosmetics. Buying access can expose the buyer to an account ban or reversal, and the account may contain someone else’s personal or payment information. A seller may also retain access or misrepresent what the account includes. There is no reliable way for a buyer to turn a prohibited sale into a legitimate ownership transfer.
What to do if your account may be compromised
- Use Epic’s official account-recovery and support process. Epic’s complaint says it uses dedicated support and security checks, including two-factor authentication and security questions. Do not rely on a seller or an unofficial recovery service to restore access.
- Secure the email account tied to Epic. Change its password if it may have been reused or exposed, and enable multifactor authentication where available.
- Change reused passwords. Use a unique password for the Epic account and for other important accounts that shared the old password.
- Review linked accounts and account activity once access is restored. Remove connections or activity you do not recognize, and follow Epic’s support guidance if anything appears to have changed without your permission.
- Do not share verification codes or account details with someone claiming they can recover or sell an account. Those details can be used to take control or impersonate the account holder.
What the available figures do—and do not—show
Epic’s February 2025 complaint is the strongest primary account of the specific alleged scheme, but it does not establish a worldwide total of stolen accounts. Night Lion Security provides historical context from around 2020–2021, while DOJ’s 2024 figures concern infostealer activity across many kinds of accounts and data, not Fortnite alone. Taken together, these sources show how account resale can intersect with credential theft and support impersonation without proving that every Fortnite account in a resale listing was stolen the same way.
