n8n is a documented self-hosted alternative to managed automation platforms, but moving workflows to it means taking responsibility for the server, security, upgrades, and reliability. Activepieces is another self-hostable option. Neither should be described as a drop-in replacement for every Zapier, IFTTT, Make, or Power Automate workflow: the available documentation does not establish complete feature parity or verify a representative migration.

What “full control” means in a self-hosted setup

With self-hosting, the workflow engine runs on infrastructure you operate, such as a server on your premises or a private cloud. n8n documents those deployment choices in its hosting documentation. You gain control over the infrastructure and configuration, but also take on the work of maintaining them.

That trade-off is the key difference from a managed automation service. A managed service reduces setup and ongoing maintenance. With n8n’s free Community Edition, its vendor comparison says infrastructure security and collaboration are the operator’s responsibility; the comparison is vendor-authored, not an independent benchmark. See n8n’s comparison with Zapier.

Which self-hosted alternative should you consider?

n8n

n8n is the clearest fit if you want a workflow engine you can run on your own infrastructure and are comfortable operating it. Its Docker Compose guide documents one deployment route and specifies a minimum host configuration for that setup; those figures are not a performance guarantee for every workflow.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Starter Kit PRO - Turbine Black (128GB Edition) (8GB RAM)
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)

  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized

Activepieces

Activepieces also documents a Docker Compose installation route. Its stated host requirements are similar in headline terms to n8n’s, but the figures are not a head-to-head performance comparison: the documentation does not define a matched workload.

Platform Documented Docker Compose prerequisites What the figures establish
n8n Docker Engine, Docker Compose v2, at least 4 GB RAM, and 2 vCPUs; its guide notes that the bundled sandbox needs additional headroom. n8n Docker Compose guide Requirements for the documented configuration, not a universal sizing recommendation or performance guarantee.
Activepieces Docker Compose v2, at least 2 vCPUs, and 4 GB RAM. Activepieces installation guide Documented installation prerequisites, not evidence that it performs better or worse than n8n.

Where can you run the workflow engine?

A VPS or cloud server

A VPS is one option for a workflow engine that needs to be reachable remotely or stay online. n8n lists cloud-provider deployment guides, including DigitalOcean, in its cloud-provider documentation. Renting a server does not remove the administration work: n8n’s VPS support scope places server access, performance, operating-system configuration, and networking outside its product support for self-hosted VPS deployments.

A computer you already operate

A home server or other always-on computer may suit someone who already manages local infrastructure. The minimum requirements in the table apply only to the documented Docker Compose configurations; they do not establish that a particular machine can handle your workflows, traffic, or availability needs.

How to decide whether moving makes sense

Before choosing a platform or shutting down an existing account, assess the work and responsibilities that come with each workflow:

  • Pi5 8GB Board: The Pi5 board is equipped with a 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz and an 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU with support for OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, which delivers a significant increase in graphics performance. Dual HD Out 4Kp60 display outputs and a built-in dual 4-channel MIPI camera/display transceiver provide state-of-the-art camera support. The Pi 5 offers a 2-3 times increase in CPU performance compare to Pi4.
  • Important Graphics Features: Equipped with an 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU and providing better graphics performance, suitable for multimedia applications, gaming, and graphics intensive tasks.Provides 1 UART interface,1 card slot that supports high-speed operation, 2 USB. 3 0.5 ports that support synchronous 0Gbps operation,2 USB 2.0 port ports,2 4Kp60 display outputs that support HDR.Built-in dedicated dual 4-channel 1Gbps MIPI DSI/CSI connectors, triple the total bandwidth.

The Case can accurately access usb-c power jack,Micro HD Out ports, usb ports, Ethernet jack, card slot, power button, 4-lane MIPI DSI/CSI connectors and so on, and it also supports installation of cooling fan.
  • 64GB Card Kit and GaN 27W USB-C Power Supply: With extra 64GB card to store more files and card readers for multiple medium, keep better performance for Raspberry Pi 5, 27W USB C Power Supply is Compatible with Pi5 8GB, offers a variety of output voltage options, including 5.1V at 5A, 9.0V at 3.0A, 12.0V at 2.25A, and 15.0V at 1.8A, providing for different device requirements.
  • App and API fit: Confirm that the trigger and every action you need are supported. Do not assume an integration on one platform exists on another.
  • Workflow complexity: Check whether your automations rely on custom logic or platform-specific behavior that would need rebuilding.
  • Operational ownership: Decide who will apply upgrades, make backups, monitor failures, secure credentials, and troubleshoot the host and network.
  • Availability: Choose a host and operating arrangement that can meet the times your automations need to run.
  • Collaboration needs: Check whether the edition and deployment you plan to use meet your team’s requirements; n8n identifies collaboration as an operator responsibility on its free Community Edition.

Migrate in stages, not all at once

A cautious migration reduces the chance that an unverified workflow quietly stops doing important work. Start with a small, representative set of automations and keep the old service available while you validate behavior.

  1. List the workflows you rely on and note their triggers, connected apps, credentials, custom logic, and failure-handling behavior.
  2. Choose a documented deployment route and confirm your host meets its stated prerequisites. Treat minimum requirements as installation guidance, not a capacity estimate.
  3. Rebuild a few representative workflows in the new platform. Verify that triggers fire, credentials work, retries behave as expected, and failures are visible and recoverable.
  4. Run the new workflows alongside the old ones where doing so is safe, compare outcomes, and resolve differences before switching over.
  5. Move remaining workflows only after they pass checks, then retire the previous automations when you are confident their replacements work.

What this does not establish

The available official documentation supports comparing deployment control, operating responsibility, and stated host prerequisites. It does not provide a complete, current feature-and-price comparison across Zapier, IFTTT, Make, Power Automate, n8n, and Activepieces, nor does it demonstrate that either self-hosted option can reproduce every workflow on those services. Check the current product documentation for the apps, features, edition boundaries, and deployment details that matter to your specific setup.
