Repairing an old phone vs buying a refurbished phone: which is better? It depends on the repair quote, the phone’s overall condition and performance, and how long it will receive security updates. Repair is often the better fit when the fault is limited and the rest of the phone still meets your needs. A refurbished replacement is worth considering when repair is costly or the phone is showing broader age-related limits—but only if you can verify its condition, battery, warranty, return terms, and software support. There is no evidence-based percentage-of-new-price cutoff that decides this for everyone.

How to compare repair with a refurbished replacement

Compare the real cost and expected usefulness of both options, rather than the repair bill alone. A lower repair quote does not help much if the phone will soon feel too slow or lose security support; a refurbished phone is not automatically a better deal if its battery is worn or its return and warranty terms are weak.

  1. Get the actual repair quote. Ask for a written estimate for your exact make, model, fault, and location. Include diagnostic fees, parts, labor, and any likely follow-up work.
  2. Price a suitable replacement. Compare the delivered price of a refurbished phone that meets your needs, including any required charger, cable, case, setup, or data-transfer costs.
  3. Estimate useful life. Consider whether the old phone’s processor, storage, display, camera, and battery remain adequate for how you use it. Check the refurbished model against the same needs.
  4. Check software support. Verify the manufacturer’s security-update commitment for each exact model and your region. Do not assume a seller’s general claim about a brand applies to every device.
  5. Compare quality and recourse. Ask what parts and tests are involved in the repair or refurbishment, and compare the repairer’s parts-and-labor guarantee with the seller’s written warranty, return window, and applicable legal rights.
  6. Account for disruption and data. A repair may mean downtime; either option can require a backup, data transfer, and setup. Consider whether you can manage without the phone while it is serviced.

When repairing your old phone makes more sense

Repair is a stronger candidate when the damage is specific—such as a broken screen or degraded battery—and the rest of the phone remains reliable and suitable. It is also more attractive when the written quote is reasonable relative to a replacement that offers comparable usefulness, and the repaired model will continue receiving security updates for the time you intend to keep it.

Before approving work, ask whether the repair could affect water resistance, whether other aging components may soon need attention, and whether the repairer will preserve or erase your data. Back up the phone first. If it is still covered by a warranty or statutory guarantee, check that coverage before paying for an out-of-warranty repair.

What to include in a repair quote

  • The diagnosed fault and the parts to be replaced, including whether they are original or third-party.
  • Parts, labor, diagnostic fees, and the total price.
  • Expected turnaround time and the repairer’s written guarantee for parts and labor.
  • Any effect on water resistance, other functions, or existing coverage.
  • Whether your data will be retained, erased, or inaccessible during service.

When a refurbished phone makes more sense

A refurbished replacement may be the better choice when repair is expensive, the phone has multiple problems, or its performance, storage, camera, or remaining update support no longer suits your needs. The key is to evaluate the particular listing—not the label “refurbished.” Confirm what was inspected and tested, what happened to the battery, what parts were used, and what recourse you have if the phone arrives in worse condition than described.

What to check before buying

  • Exact model and storage: Confirm the model number and capacity, not just the product family name.
  • Inspection and testing: Ask what was checked and restored, and whether the phone was tested after refurbishment.
  • Battery: Look for a disclosed battery-health standard or confirmation that the battery was replaced. Do not assume a refurbished device has a new battery.
  • Parts and appearance: Check whether replacement parts are original or third-party, and what the cosmetic grade means in practice.
  • Accessories and compatibility: Confirm whether a charger and cable are included and whether the phone works with your network and SIM.
  • Warranty and returns: Read the written warranty, exclusions, return window, and who pays return shipping.
  • Security updates: Check the manufacturer’s remaining support for the exact model and your region.

Consumer Reports’ April 2025 guidance highlights checking the inspection and restoration process, testing, battery replacement, accessories, and parts when evaluating a refurbished phone. Its recommendations are useful checks, but they do not establish the condition or warranty of any particular seller’s listing.

What consumer evidence says about the trade-off

GSMA’s 2025 global survey found that 64% of consumers surveyed had needed their current or previous phone repaired. Among those respondents, half reported needing a broken-screen repair and one-third a battery replacement. More than 60% of consumers who needed a repair proceeded with one; among those who repaired, 63% used a repair shop, 16% a mobile operator, 14% the manufacturer, and 7% repaired the phone themselves. High repair cost was the biggest reported barrier. These are survey results, not a prediction of what your phone will need or what your repair will cost. GSMA, Rethinking Mobile Phones (2025).

The same report found that nearly half of surveyed consumers considered cost savings a very important benefit of buying refurbished, and 40% valued being able to buy a higher-end model than they could afford new. But shoppers also reported concerns: 49% rated the possibility that a refurbished phone would break sooner than a new phone as a very important concern; 46% said the same about worse-than-expected physical condition, 42% about cleanliness or hygiene, and 38% about a shorter warranty. Those figures describe reported consumer concerns and benefits, not the likelihood that a particular refurbished phone will fail. GSMA’s 2025 report on refurbished-phone perceptions.

For scale, France sold 6.9 million refurbished mobile phones in 2023, representing 37% of its mobile-phone market, according to Arcep’s 2025 figures as cited by ADEME. That is France-specific market data, not a global estimate or evidence that refurbished is the right choice for an individual buyer. ADEME’s account of Arcep’s figures.

DIY repair is a separate decision

If you are considering a do-it-yourself repair, first confirm that the part and procedure are intended for your exact model and that you have the skills and tools to do the work safely. A smartphone repair tool kit can be relevant, but owning one does not make every repair feasible or risk-free. Check whether opening the phone could affect water resistance, damage other components, or complicate warranty coverage. If the repair involves a battery or you are unsure of the procedure, a qualified repairer may be the safer option.

How consumer protections differ by location

European Union

The European Commission says EU right-to-repair rules began applying on 31 July 2026. For products that are technically repairable under EU law, consumers can request repair; it must be provided free or at a reasonable price within a reasonable time. If a consumer chooses repair instead of replacement during the liability period, the legal guarantee is extended by at least 12 months. The Commission’s repair platform is expected to become operational in 2027, so it is not yet an available service as of the rules’ start date. European Commission: right to repair.

EU ecodesign requirements for covered mobile phones and tablets include repairability and spare-part provisions. From 20 June 2025, specified replacement processes must meet tool and access criteria; certain battery designs can use an alternative route based on durability and water- and dust-resistance requirements. This does not mean every phone battery must be user-removable, and coverage depends on the product and model. Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1670.

EU consumer guidance describes a two-year legal guarantee for defects that existed at delivery and become apparent within two years. It also says software updates should keep products with digital elements usable and cyber-secure. Check the guidance and your seller’s terms for how these protections apply to your purchase. United States

In the United States, warranty coverage can depend on the written terms and state law. FTC guidance distinguishes written and implied warranties; it does not establish one nationwide warranty duration for refurbished phones.
