Renesas announced two wireless microcontrollers on December 10, 2025: the RA6W1, which provides dual-band Wi-Fi 6, and the RA6W2, which adds integrated Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Both support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi; choose the RA6W2 when the same chip must also provide BLE connectivity.
What is the difference between the RA6W1 and RA6W2?
The main difference is integrated Bluetooth LE. Renesas describes the RA6W1 as a Wi-Fi 6 MCU, while the RA6W2 combines Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth LE. Renesas’s RA6W2 datasheet specifies Bluetooth LE 5.1.
| Feature | RA6W1 | RA6W2 |
|---|---|---|
| Connectivity | Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 | Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth LE 5.1 |
| Wi-Fi bands | 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz | 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz |
| Main processor | Arm Cortex-M33, up to 160 MHz (Renesas, 2026 datasheet) | Arm Cortex-M33 Wi-Fi MCU; Bluetooth subsystem includes a Cortex-M0+ (Renesas, 2026 datasheet) |
| Implementation options announced | FCQFN and WLCSP packages; Wi-Fi module RRQ61001 | BGA package; Wi-Fi/Bluetooth LE module RRQ61051 |
| Design fit | Wi-Fi connectivity without integrated BLE | Wi-Fi and BLE connectivity in one device |
The RA6W1 datasheet lists Bluetooth coexistence as a feature, but coexistence support is not the same as an integrated Bluetooth LE radio and stack. If a design needs BLE, verify the complete radio, stack, antenna, and system requirements rather than treating coexistence as BLE support.
Does the RA6W1 support 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
Yes. Renesas specifies 1×1 Wi-Fi 6 operation on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, with a 20 MHz channel width, for the RA6W1. The RA6W2 also supports both bands. The RA6W1 datasheet lists station and SoftAP modes, WPA/WPA2/WPA3 security and Enhanced Open, plus a TCP/IP stack available through socket APIs. Refer to the current Renesas documents for implementation details and supported configurations.

What devices could use a low-power Wi-Fi 6 MCU?
Renesas names smart-home, industrial, medical, and consumer products as target settings, with examples such as environmental sensors, smart locks, thermostats, monitoring cameras, and medical monitors. These are manufacturer application examples, not a guarantee that either MCU meets every product’s regulatory, safety, reliability, radio-range, or power requirements.
The company’s December 2025 announcement reported sleep-mode power figures from 200 nA to 4 μA and below 50 μA in DTIM10 mode. These are Renesas operating claims; the announcement’s figures alone do not establish measurement conditions or make a direct comparison with other chips. Renesas datasheets also describe battery life of “up to a year or more,” dependent on the application. Treat that as a conditional manufacturer claim, not a general battery-life guarantee.

Modules, development support, and availability
Alongside the chips, Renesas announced RRQ61001, a Wi-Fi 6 module, and RRQ61051, a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth LE combo module. The company said its development kit includes flash, a PCB trace antenna, connectors, and an embedded power analyzer. It also named Renesas Flexible Software Package (FSP), e² studio, and an SDK as development support.
The original release said the RA6W1 was available in FCQFN and WLCSP packages and forecast RA6W2 BGA availability in Q1 2026. That forecast period has passed, but it does not establish current stock or shipment status. Check Renesas or an authorized distributor for current availability, exact module and kit part numbers, and compatible documentation.
