Renesas and Nidec’s 8-in-1 E-Axle is a jointly developed proof of concept, not a production vehicle system offered for sale. It brings eight EV drivetrain and power-management functions together under the control of one Renesas microcontroller (MCU) and one power-management IC (PMIC). Renesas said system-level testing was complete when it announced the design on November 11, 2024.
What the 8-in-1 E-Axle integrates
An E-Axle typically combines an electric drive motor, reduction gear and inverter. Renesas and Nidec’s PoC extends that core by integrating additional charging, power-conversion, distribution and vehicle-control functions. The eight functions are:
- Motor
- Reduction gear
- Inverter
- DC/DC converter
- On-board battery charger (OBC)
- Power distribution unit (PDU)
- Battery management system (BMS)
- Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heater control
Renesas says one MCU and one PMIC control the integrated system. The companies present consolidation as a way to reduce component count, cost and size; the announcement does not quantify those reductions.

What performance figures Renesas published
The following are figures Renesas published for this demonstration design in its November 11, 2024 announcement. They are not specifications for every E-Axle or a promise of production-vehicle performance.

The announcement does not provide comparable ratings for the motor, reduction gear, PDU, BMS or PTC heater control.
Which companies and components are involved
Renesas lists the RH850/U2B 32-bit automotive-control MCU, an MCU PMIC, the RAJ2930004AGM isolated gate driver, an IGBT module for the inverter, and power devices for the DC/DC converter and OBC. Nidec contributes the motor and reduction gear. The announcement does not identify a specific vehicle or OEM program using the complete system.

How the design developed from the 2023 collaboration
In a June 5, 2023 announcement, the companies described a broader X-in-1 collaboration and outlined a two-phase plan. The first planned PoC was a 6-in-1 system combining the motor, inverter, gearbox, DC/DC converter, OBC and PDU, using silicon-carbide (SiC) power devices. A second phase planned for 2024 would add the BMS and use gallium-nitride (GaN) devices in the DC/DC and OBC sections, with higher-frequency operation intended to support further size and cost reduction.

It does not establish that every element of the earlier semiconductor plan was used in the demonstrated system: Renesas specifically lists an IGBT inverter module, while the announcement does not specify the material of every other power device.

Is it ready for production, and can you buy it?
No production launch or public purchasing channel for the complete E-Axle is announced. Renesas described it as a proof of concept and said it would be demonstrated live at electronica 2024 in Munich, November 12–15. Completion of system-level testing and a demonstration indicate that the concept was exercised as an integrated system; they do not by themselves establish production qualification, safety certification, an OEM contract or availability as a catalog product.
The companies do name individual semiconductor components and Nidec’s motor and reduction gear, but that is not the same as offering the complete eight-function assembly for purchase. The announcement does not provide a vehicle model, production schedule or retail ordering route.

- Which functions are integrated, and how many MCUs or control ECUs coordinate them.
- Inverter output and efficiency, plus the DC/DC and OBC ratings.
- Power-device technology, such as SiC, GaN, silicon or IGBT-based implementations.
- Physical size and mass, thermal-management design, diagnostics and functional-safety coverage.
- Whether the system is a concept, a tested prototype, production-qualified hardware or a design-in for a named vehicle.
