Renesas announced its agreement to acquire Israeli wireless-technology company Celeno on October 28, 2021, at an approximate US$315 million all-cash valuation that included milestone-linked consideration. The acquisition closed on December 20, 2021, making Celeno a wholly owned Renesas subsidiary. The purchase added Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E chipsets, software, Wi-Fi-based sensing technology, and engineering capacity to Renesas’s existing semiconductor portfolio.
When did the acquisition happen, and what did it cost?
Renesas announced the definitive agreement on October 28, 2021. The companies’ boards unanimously approved it, and the deal was expected to close by the end of that year, subject to customary conditions. Renesas announced completion on December 20, 2021; Celeno then became a wholly owned subsidiary.
Renesas described the transaction as approximately US$315 million, or about 35.9 billion yen using the company’s stated exchange rate of 114 yen per US dollar. The consideration was payable gradually in cash following specified milestones, rather than entirely at closing. Renesas’s transaction filing included approximately US$45 million tied to conditions concerning future product development and progress toward mass production. These amounts describe the 2021 transaction, not a current valuation.

Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E products
Celeno supplied wireless communication solutions, including Wi-Fi chipsets and software for home networks, smart buildings, enterprise, and industrial markets. Renesas highlighted Celeno’s Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E offerings as compact chipsets designed for high network performance and security, with low latency and low power consumption. The deal therefore added both wireless technology and software expertise to Renesas’s portfolio.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Wi-Fi Doppler Imaging
Celeno’s Wi-Fi Doppler Imaging was a Wi-Fi-based sensing technology, not a conventional camera. It used standard Wi-Fi signals to depict, track, and analyze the motion, behavior, and location of people and objects. Renesas described possible uses in elderly care and assisted living, home security, safe driving, and digital or connected factories. The company said the approach could reduce the need for multiple cameras or sensors in some home and commercial environments; that is a potential application, not a claim that Wi-Fi sensing can replace every camera or sensor.
People and engineering locations
Celeno was headquartered in Israel. Its integration added an Israeli design center and distributed R&D staff based in Israel, Ukraine, India, China, Taiwan, and other locations, expanding Renesas’s engineering and software-development capacity.

Why did Renesas buy Celeno?
Renesas framed the acquisition as a way to combine Celeno’s Wi-Fi and software capabilities with Renesas’s existing low-power MCU, MPU, and SoC processors, wireless ICs, sensors, and power-management technologies. The strategic aim was a broader end-to-end connectivity portfolio spanning client devices and access points, with applications across IoT, infrastructure, industrial, and automotive markets.

Renesas said the purchase would strengthen its connectivity offerings and system-level solutions; the announcement does not establish that every Celeno technology was immediately integrated into a Renesas product.
